The Arabic Language 2 module is part of the LICSAAM study program, within the MOAA curriculum. Its learning objectives fall within the area of language skills learning. They are: to develop abilities in Arabic language competence in the context of the most common communicative situations, as well as in reading and interpreting texts of a certain level of difficulty. The teaching provides the key tools necessary to begin acquiring a solid knowledge of the Arabic language, culture, and societies.
The student will acquire knowledge, in order of priority, of the basic aspects of Modern Standard Arabic (vocabulary, morphology, syntax), achieving a level of language competence equivalent to A2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Specifically:
1. Knowledge and understanding
• Know key phrases necessary to interact in the most common communicative contexts.
• Understand grammatical aspects of Standard Arabic that are particularly important in relation to the nominal and verbal system, including inflection, and sentence types.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
• Be able to correctly use key phrases necessary to interact in the most common communicative contexts.
• Be able to correctly apply learned grammatical and lexical aspects for understanding written texts.
• Be able to translate sentences of moderate difficulty from Standard Arabic into Italian, correctly applying basic grammatical knowledge.
3. Judgment skills
• Be able to use the available tools to assess one’s own level of knowledge, skills, and language competence.
4. Communication skills
• Be able to communicate the specifics of linguistic analysis using appropriate terminology.
5. Learning skills
• Be able to connect different study contexts and apply one’s own knowledge, skills, and abilities for personal and professional growth.

Have basic knowledge of Standard Arabic (alphabet, elementary notions of morphology and syntax, basic vocabulary) acquired during the Arabic Language 1 course.
The course provides students with a comprehensive elementary-level knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic, both written and spoken. Specifically, it offers:
• Instruction on important grammatical aspects related to nominal and verbal morphology (e.g., weak verb forms) and syntax (e.g., conditional sentences); vocabulary acquisition: 30 hours of lectures.
• Application of the above knowledge to develop active and passive skills and training for linguistic interaction in the most common communicative contexts: 120 hours of practical exercises.

Learning is evaluated through a written exam and an oral exam. The written exam, consisting of exercises similar to those carried out during the course, aims to verify the skills acquired (writing, vocalization, translation from Arabic to Italian and from Italian to Arabic, and comprehension). The use of dictionaries is not allowed during the written exam. In the oral exam, the student must demonstrate the ability to use the grammatical and communicative knowledge and skills acquired during lectures and language exercises. The 12 ECTS credits associated with the Arabic Language 2 course are awarded upon official recording of the exam, that is, after passing both the written and oral exams.
