The course is one of the core modules of the BA programme in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management (TARS curriculum). It provides students with a basic knowledge of the history of modern and contemporary music, with particular emphasis on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and introduces the fundamental tools required to understand the development of musical languages, genres, performance practices, and the main historical and cultural contexts of musical production and reception.

The course also aims to develop students’ ability to situate musical phenomena within the broader framework of European cultural history, fostering a critical understanding of the relationships between music, society, institutions, and the performing arts.

The course forms part of a two-module sequence (see Music History I). Students obtain the full 12 ECTS credits upon successful completion of both modules.
– demonstrate knowledge of the principal historical, social, and cultural contexts, as well as the musical forms that shaped music history between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries;
– understand the development of musical languages and the major genres of the modern and contemporary repertoire;
– formulate critical judgments on significant theoretical texts, sources, and musical works from the history of modern and contemporary music;
– analyse musical repertoires and documents through guided listening and the study of primary and secondary sources;
– situate musical works, composers, and musical practices within their broader historical and cultural contexts.
No entry requirements are requested.
Throughout the course, students will critically engage with the principal themes of the history of modern and contemporary music, with particular attention to the development of musical languages, forms, genres, and performance practices between the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.
Through the analysis of musical works, historical sources, and musical documents, the course will explore the relationship between music and society, the role of musical institutions, the emergence of the public concert, the rise of the modern composer, and the major aesthetic transformations that shaped the Romantic era and the twentieth century.
Particular attention will be devoted to selected genres and repertoires of the European instrumental tradition, examined within their historical, cultural, and production contexts, as well as to the principal movements and trends that contributed to redefining musical language between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
