The course is part of the core curriculum of the degree programme in Languages, Civilisations and Language Sciences and contributes to the development of fundamental knowledge in the field of language education. It introduces the role of educational technologies, with particular attention to the use of games—especially digital ones—as tools for language learning. The course provides students with basic tools to understand and analyse their use in educational contexts, in relation to the main learning theories.
1. Knowledge and understanding
Know the main educational technologies and types of games (analogue and digital) used in language education.
Understand the role of educational technologies and games in language learning processes, also in relation to major learning theories.

2. Applying knowledge and understanding
Be able to analyse and use, in a guided way, games and digital tools in language education contexts.
Be able to recognise the educational potential of different types of games in relation to learning objectives.

3. Making judgements
Be able to reflect critically on the role of educational technologies and games in educational contexts.
Be able to evaluate, in an informed way, the use of games and digital tools in different contexts.

4. Communication skills
Be able to describe and discuss concepts and approaches related to language education, educational technologies, and game-based learning.

5. Learning skills
Be able to keep up to date with educational technologies and game-based approaches to language education.
Be able to develop a reflective attitude towards the use of games and digital tools.
For this course there are no prerequisites.

Required readings:

Students who are unable to complete their preparation in the classroom can access the study materials on Moodle, which will, in any case, be identical to those used by students attending in person.
Student assessment will be conducted through a written examination consisting of 12 multiple-choice questions (1 point each) and 4 short-answer open questions (up to a maximum of 5 points each). Exam duration: 50 minutes.
The questions aim to assess both the theoretical knowledge acquired and the skills of comprehension, analysis, and application of educational technologies within the contexts of language education.
The open questions are evaluated based on the following criteria: (a) correctness and relevance of theoretical knowledge; (b) capacity for comprehension and processing of contents; (c) appropriate use of specialized and language-teaching terminology; (d) clarity and effectiveness of expression.
During the semester, group work and activities will be carried out and taken into consideration for the final evaluation.

The lecturer has a duty to ensure that the rules regarding the authenticity and originality of exam tests and papers are respected. Therefore, if there is suspicion of irregular conduct, an additional assessment may be conducted, which could differ from the original exam description.

A. Marks in the range 18–22 will be awarded in the presence of:
- sufficient knowledge and applied understanding of the course content;
- limited ability to collect and/or interpret data, demonstrating autonomous judgement;
- sufficient communication skills, particularly in the use of disciplinary language.
B. Marks in the range 23–26 will be awarded in the presence of:
- satisfactory knowledge and applied understanding of the course content;
- satisfactory ability to collect and/or interpret data, demonstrating autonomous judgement;
- adequate communication skills, particularly in the use of disciplinary language.
C. Marks in the range 27–30 will be awarded in the presence of:
- good or very good knowledge and applied understanding of the course content;
- good or very good ability to collect and/or interpret data, demonstrating autonomous judgement;
- fully appropriate communication skills, particularly in the use of disciplinary language.
D. Honours (cum laude) will be awarded in the presence of excellent knowledge and applied understanding of the course content, as well as excellent judgement and communication skills.
Blended: 10 in-presence lectures and 5 online lectures in asynchronous mode with forum activities.
Group work and activities combine classroom attendance and online forum interaction. These activities follow the schedule and progression of the planned lectures: the timeframes close to allow the subsequent workshop to take place.
The language of instruction is Italian. However, some materials uploaded to the course Moodle page may be in English.
