The aim of the course (which is part of the characterizing and compulsory ones of the degree course in Archival and library science) is to provide students with the fundamental concepts needed to use, design, and manage digital libraries, based on the hypertextual paradigm.

At the end of the course students will be able to utilize (as users) any digital library and to orient themselves (as librarians) in the main work activities of any contemporary library, if at least partially digital.
The course is primarily intended for students with prior knowledge of bibliography and library science. Those who have not yet taken exams in these disciplines are encouraged to also study the texts listed in "Bibliography B" (below) and watch the corresponding videos, which will be made available to them on the e-learning platform.
The main topics covered will be: information organization; hypertextuality (theory, history, and applications); the semantic web; definitions, content (e-books, e-journals, open archives, databases, etc.), and services (digitization, online reference, lending and preservation of digital materials, etc.) of digital libraries; artificial intelligence in libraries.

The lecturer has a duty to ensure that the rules regarding the authenticity and originality of exam tests and papers are respected. Therefore, if there is suspicion of irregular conduct, an additional assessment may be conducted, which could differ from the original exam description.

The gradation will depend on the answers given to three questions. Each answer will correspond to 10 points. They will be taken into consideration: knowledge of the contents (40%), conceptual clarity (30%), appropriateness of language (20%) and ability to summarize (which does not mean writing little, but knowing how to concentrate on the essential, 10%).
The course will be held in a "blended" (or mixed) format. To participate, students must register on the Ca' Foscari e-learning platform, where half of the lessons will be held, while the other half will be held in-person.
The online lessons consist of a series of videos and other teaching materials (which will be made available online at the beginning of each week and which students can access at any time until the end of the course) and a discussion forum (constantly available from the beginning to the end of the course). So the online half of the course can also be followed by those who can not be online on certain days of the week.
