The course is part of the integrative activities of the Master’s Degree programme 'Language and Civilization of Asia and Mediterranean Africa' and aims to provide students with knowledge related to the teaching of the Japanese language in the context of the Italian school system.
Knowledge and understanding:
-know the main theories of language teaching and models of second language acquisition/learning;
-know the principles of instructional design applied to language teaching.

Applying knowledge and understanding:
-be able to critically analyse teaching materials and tools in light of the theories studied.

Making judgements:
-be able to critically assess theoretical models and teaching tools, recognising their limits and implications.

Communication skills:
-be able to recognize and formulate with terminological precision the concepts and theoretical distinctions covered in the course.

Learning skills:
-be able to integrate different sources in Italian, English and Japanese, with a view to autonomous, lifelong learning.
Japanese language proficiency at least at undergraduate level; good proficiency in Italian and English.

The course is organised in three blocks. The first covers the main theories of language teaching and models of second language acquisition/learning. The second applies these theories to the case of Japanese, analysing its specific linguistic and pedagogical features. The third introduces the principles of instructional design, from early theories of instruction to the design of digital tools and environments for language learning.

The exam consists of a one-hour written test, held in a computer lab.

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

The final grade is calculated on the basis of the total number of answers, the number of correct answers, and the maximum score set for the test.
Interactive lectures, group work, and discussions.
Students are required to attend class with a device (laptop or tablet), with at least one device.
Non-attending students are required to contact the teacher at the beginning of the course.
Students must access the Moodle platform for this course.
