KOREAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE MOD.1

Korean Language mod. 2 (second language) is one of the core courses within the "China" and "Japan" curricula of the Bachelor's Degree Programme in "Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa". The course builds on Module 1 and further develops students' basic language skills through the study of the main grammatical structures and expressions of Korean. The course is divided into two modules distributed over two semesters.

1. Knowledge and understanding:
Consolidate and deepen the knowledge of the main grammatical structures of Korean at elementary level. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main grammatical structures of Korean at CEFR A1+/A2 level.

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
Identify different grammatical categories and their properties. Demonstrate a general understanding of the main grammatical structures of Korean at elementary level. Describe the grammatical constructions and phenomena studied during the course using the appropriate terminology and the basic tools of syntactic analysis acquired. Apply the grammatical structures learned to express past and future events, dates and time, seasons, make suggestions and arrange appointments.

Students are expected to have achieved the learning outcomes of "Korean Language Mod. 1".

Lesson 6 – The -아야/어야 되다 form, the A/V/N-(이)지요? form
Lesson 7 – The progressive -고 있다 form, the negative form 못
Lesson 8 – The -(으)려고 하다 form, N에서 N까지, the verb -아/어 주다
Lesson 9 – The particle (으)로, irregular verbs (2); the deletion of "ㄹ", nominal modifiers (1)
Lesson 10 – The particles 에게, 한테, and 께, the -아/어/여 보다 form
Lesson 11 – The conditional -(으)면 form, nominal modifiers (2)
Lesson 12 – The -고 싶다 (싶어하다) form, the potential -(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다 form

The final examination consists of a written test (approximately 1 hour) including multiple-choice and open-ended questions covering the course contents.

The 12 credits associated with this course will be awarded after successfully passing the Mod. 1 assessment and the final Mod. 2 examination. The final grade will be calculated as the average of the grades obtained in the two examinations and will be officially recorded under Mod. 2.
The grade obtained in Mod. 1 will remain valid until the successful completion of Mod. 2, and in any case no later than the first examination session in January of the following academic year.
If a student does not pass Mod. 2 by the first January examination session, they will be required to retake Mod. 1 and may do so starting from the second January examination session.

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

Below 18/30: insufficient.

30 with honours: Excellent knowledge of the course contents, full command of the basic grammatical structures and core vocabulary of Korean, with accurate and appropriate use of the language.
27–30: Very good knowledge of the course contents and correct use of the main basic grammatical structures and core vocabulary.
24–26: Good knowledge of the course contents, with minor inaccuracies in the use of basic grammatical structures and core vocabulary.
21–23: Satisfactory knowledge of the course contents, with some gaps, but the ability to use the main basic grammatical structures and core vocabulary.
18–20: Sufficient knowledge of the course contents and acquisition of the fundamental language skills.
Below 18: Insufficient preparation; the minimum learning outcomes of the course have not been achieved.
