TOOLS AND METHODOLOGIES SEMINARS (SL) - MOD. 2

Through a series of seminars delivered by experts, the course explores the main approaches and methods used in educational linguistics research. It addresses the academic writing of research proposals and reports, as well as the principal qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches, including action research, ethnography, case studies, thematic analysis and questionnaire-based research. Particular attention is devoted to participatory, visual and arts-based methods, such as Photovoice, visual narratives and digital storytelling. Through the presentation of empirical studies, the course also explores topics such as plurilingualism, migration, linguistic and cultural inclusion, language socialisation, young people’s digital practices, and second-language literacy among adults with limited or no prior schooling. Finally, the course guides participants in the design of research instruments and the analysis and interpretation of data across different educational contexts.

The specific objective of the course is to develop knowledge and understanding of the primary research methods used in language teaching.
Students will be able to:
- gain awareness of the main research approaches by analyzing the characteristics of qualitative studies, quantitative studies, and mixed-methods studies, as well as the various data collection tools and data analysis procedures;
- apply the knowledge acquired to their own research projects;
- utilize appropriate academic language for the dissemination of research findings.

Exam not required. Learning assessment takes place through the submission of the written paper required for advancement to the following year.

The instructor is responsible for ensuring the authenticity and originality of all examinations and coursework. In cases of suspected academic misconduct, an additional on-site assessment may be required during the exams, which may differ from the standard format.

The written paper, if evaluated positively, will contribute to advancement to the next year.
