After the Master Degree in Chemical and Process Engineering in 2009, Matteo Gigli completed his Ph.D. in 2013 with a Thesis entitled “Novel etheroatom containing aliphatic polyesters for biomedical and environmental applications”. The research was carried out at the Dept. of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) of the University of Bologna, where he has also been employed as Postdoctoral Fellow.
From November 2013 to May 2015, he worked as Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Freiburg (Germany) as a member of the BASF Joint Research Network on Advanced Materials and Systems (JONAS). From March 2016 to August 2019 he was appointed as Postdoctoral Fellow at the Dept. of Chemical Science and Tecnologies of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”.
Among various experiences abroad, Matteo joined the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as visiting scholar in summer 2017 and 2018, he was visiting researcher at the Advanced Materials & Systems Research Centre of BASF in Ludwigshafen (Germany) in 2011, and in 2008 he carried out his Master Thesis research work at the Unit of Bioengineering of the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium) within the Erasmus program framework.

He is author of 47 publications on peer-reviewed international journals, 3 patents and contributed with over 30 oral and poster presentations to national and international conferences. His current H-index is 20.

Matteo has been awarded in 2013 with the Future Leaders in Chemistry Prize by CAS, a division of the American Chemical Society, and in 2014 with the PhD Best Thesis Award by the Italian Association of Chemistry for Engineering (AICIng).

His research interests are mainly devoted to the development innovative functional materials and nanostructures for sustainable applications:

  • natural polyphenol-based nanoparticles and nanocapsules for the release of active compounds
  • biodegradable and bio-based polymers and (nano)composites for active packaging purposes
  • biocompatible polymers, hydrogels, shape-memory materials and thermoplastic elastomers for biomedical applications
  • polymer electrolytes and separators for energy applications
