Monia Chies is a social anthropologist and Tibetologist. In 2020 she received her PhD in Tibetan Studies from Humboldt University Berlin with a dissertation on the post-earthquake reconstruction and revitalization of a Tibetan Buddhist Pilgrimage site in Eastern Tibet (Qinghai, West China). She is a Marie Curie Fellow (2020-2024) at Ca' Foscari University and principal investigator of HYSOTIB on hydro-sociality in the area of the so-called Three River Sources (or China's Water Tower) which are the sources of the Mekong, Yangtze and Yellow River in Qinghai Province.

Research interests: post-disaster, risk and vulnerability studies; cultural and environmental heritage practices; hydro-sociality and river geomorphology; Asian history of explorations; history of the sino-tibetan frontier; ethnography and oral history.
