Born in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines in 1990, Carlotta Lucarini pursued an interdisciplinary academic path, receiving most of her education in Italy and Spain. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Palaeontology from the University of Florence, she was awarded a scholarship that enabled her to undertake a Master's degree in Historia y Patrimonio Naval (Naval History and Heritage) at the University of Murcia, Spain, where she first developed an interest in underwater archaeology. She subsequently earned a Master's degree in Archaeology from the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, participating in numerous excavation campaigns in Italy and abroad, in both terrestrial and underwater contexts.

Her research career was further consolidated through a joint PhD programme between the University of Murcia and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, focusing on the geoarchaeological study of coastal lagoon and wetland environments. Characterised by a strongly interdisciplinary approach, her research combined coastal geomorphological and hydrographic analyses with field-based archaeological investigations, addressing the specific challenges associated with the study of amphibious landscapes. Particular attention was devoted to underwater and wetland archaeology in shallow-water environments characterised by strong currents and limited visibility.

Throughout her scientific career, she has developed advanced expertise in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for archaeological research, monitoring, and the protection of submerged and semi-submerged archaeological sites. Her research has been supported by competitive national projects, including PRIN 2022 and PNRR CHANGES, through which she has collaborated with multidisciplinary research teams, particularly geomorphologists and geophysicists from the University of Padua. These collaborations have contributed to the development of innovative methodologies for the study of lagoon and coastal environments, with results disseminated through scientific publications, conferences, and national and international seminars.

She currently collaborates with universities and research institutions in both Italy and Spain and serves as Guest Editor of the special issue of the journal Heritage entitled Advances in Digital Technologies for Maritime Archaeology.
