Valeria Burgio holds a postdoc research grant at Ca' Foscari University, in the ERC project Health-X-Cross. Her research object is the visualization of microbiome in scientific research.

She also teaches Communication, Visual and Interior Design at the Ca’ Foscari School for International Education. She has been fixed-time researcher for six years at the Free University of Bolzano, where she has been teaching Visual Culture and Theories and Languages of Visual Communication and she's been doing research in the field of visual semiotics and data visualization. She holds a degree in Communication Studies at the University of Bologna (final mark degree: 110/110 cum laude), and a Phd in Art and design Theories from the Iuav University of Venice. She has been a postdoc at the EHESS/CNRS in Paris and at the Iuav, Venice.

She's the author of the book Rumore Visivo. Semiotica e critica dell'infografica (2021), published by Mimesis, Milan. She has co-curated the book and the project Europa Dreaming. Yearning for Europe from the Brenner Pass (2019), published by Bolzano University Press. She also published the monography William Kentridge (2014), Postmedia Books, Milan. She's been project coordinator and editor for the book Migropolis Venice. Atlas of a Global Situation (2010), Hatje Cantz Verlag.
