I graduated with honours in Philosophy from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan in November 1963.

From 1970 to 1980 I was a lecturer in History of Philosophy at the Ca 'Foscari University of Venice. From 1981 to 2011 I was a full professor of Moral Philosophy at the same university.

I also held the position of Director of the Department of Philosophy and Theory of Sciences at this same University, where I founded the Interuniversity Centre of Studies on Ethics (CISE) in 1995, which I directed until 2011.

I also taught courses of Moral Philosophy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Milan and at the State University  of Pavia. I founded the Centre for General and Applied Ethics (CEGA) at the Almo Collegio Borromeo (Pavia) in 2005, which I directed until 2022.

I held the position of President of the Italian Society of Moral Philosophy (SIFM) from 2013 to 2016.

Together with F. Botturi I directed the "Ethics Yearbook" (2004-2009).

I also directed the "Ethics" section of the Philosophical Encyclopaedia (Bompiani, Milano 2006 and ff; 12 vols.)

I direct from 2005 to 2022 the CEGA ETHICA series at the Orthotes Publishing House (Naples-Salerno).

In 2013 I was awarded by ministerial decree the title of Professor Emeritus.
