He graduated from the University of Padua with a degree in Statistical and Economic Sciences in 1988. He went on to obtain a DEA in Statistique et Modèles Aleatoires en Economie et Finance from the University of Paris VII in 1992, followed by a PhD in Statistics from the same university in 1994.

From February 1994 to October 2003, he was a researcher in the Department of Statistical Sciences at the University of Padua. From November 2003 to February 2005, he held the same position in the Department of Statistics at Ca' Foscari University in Venice. From March 2005 until December 2017, he was an Associate Professor of Statistics, first in the Department of Statistics until December 2010 and then in the Department of Environmental Sciences, Informatics and Statistics at Ca' Foscari University in Venice.

He is currently a full professor of statistics in the same department.

He has also been a visiting professor at Université Paris 1, Université Montpellier II, Université Paris-Nanterre, Université Bretagne Occidentale and Université Paris Sciences et Lettres.

He was an associate editor of the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series C, and is currently a member of the Spatial Statistics editorial board.

His main areas of research are spatial statistics, extreme value theory, and environmental statistics.
