Course content

Grammar revision as well as extensive new advanced grammar, paying particular attention to areas that are problematic for Italian mother tongue speakers such as singular and plural agreement, perfect and continuous tenses.

Lexis looks at more advanced word fields, such as sophisticated emotions, binomials, and connotation.

Pronunciation: includes contrastive stress and stress in multi-syllable adjectives as well as understanding different accents.

Listening: with particular attention to video listening

Speaking: continuation with presentation skills; All students will be required to do a presentation for the midterm assessment.

Writing:

There will be five in-class writing assignments: 3 in the first semester (last lesson in October, November and December) and two in the second semester (last lesson in February and March). The marks are included in your average for ongoing assessment. Those who do not complete all five written in-class assignments will have an additional written assignment in the final assessment at the end of the second semester.

Ongoing assessment in class:

- speaking activities and presentations

You will be given marks for the work you do during the year, and these will be taken into account in your final mark. Non-attending students are asked to follow the Moodle page to keep an eye out for homework assignments.

Presentation – either individual or in pairs/groups.

Both assessments are obligatory if you want to take the module exam.

In order to take the module exam, you have to have passed the midterm (the week of January 19) and final assessments of the Esercitazioni course (last week of the second semester) (further information below).

Course content

Grammar: Consolidation and revision of C1 grammar as well as introduction of new advanced grammar, paying particular attention to areas that are problematic for Italian mother tongue speakers.

Lexis: emphasis on word building (morphology), phrasal verbs, idioms

Reading: improving reading skills by skimming and scanning

Pronunciation: Word stress, sentence stress, contrastive stress and connected speech.

Listening: improve comprehension with special focus on note taking skills

Speaking: General presentation skills with practice in giving presentations (individual and in groups).

Writing: Basic sentence structure; paragraphs; punctuation; informal vs. formal; emails, essay, report, article, review.

There will be five in-class writing assignments: 3 in the first semester (last lesson in October, November and December) and two in the second semester (last lesson in February and March). Course assessments 

First semester assessment:

Written test based on the grammar and vocabulary covered during lessons (from course book Ready For). This will be during the last lesson before Christmas

Debate skills. You will be given a sign-up sheet so you can choose when you do it (in January)

On-going assessment during lessons: you will be given marks for the work you do during the year, and these will be taken into account in your final mark. Non-attending students are asked to follow the Moodle page to keep an eye out for homework assignments.

Second semester assessment

There are two parts to the final assessment at the end of the second semester (during the last week): the first paper is based on the grammar and vocabulary in the course book.

The second is a written paper, summarizing the key points from two different passages.

During the semester there will be in-class practice.

Both written assessments and debate are obligatory if you want to take the module exam.
