Incoming Visiting Students

Ca' Foscari University of Venice encourages international students to broaden their academic experience by allowing them to spend a study or research period at Ca’ Foscari University as Visiting Students (free movers).

Who can apply

The Visiting Student status can be granted to:

  1. students enrolled in foreign Universities with which Ca' Foscari University of Venice has no valid international mobility agreements;
  2. students enrolled in partner institutions of Ca' Foscari University who have not been selected and nominated by their home University within the framework of one of a valid bilateral agreement;
  3. students who have completed a mobility period at Ca' Foscari University within the framework of one of the valid international mobility programmes and intend to extend their stay.

Visiting Students must be enrolled at their home University in one of the following academic cycles:

  1. a first-cycle academic degree (Bachelor);
  2. a second-cycle academic degree (Master);
  3. a third-cycle academic degree (PhD);
  4. in the fourth year of a single-cycle academic degree.

Available academic activities

Visiting Students may carry out the following activities:

  1. attend courses of the University and take the corresponding exams;
  2. carry out research activities, in order to write the thesis or obtain a PhD. The student must choose an academic tutor on his/her own among the University lecturers who have expertise in the subject.

Admission procedures

The international students interested in this programme shall submit the following documents to  incoming.visiting@unive.it:

  • identity card (passport for non-EU citizens);
  • recognised certification of Italian or English level B2 (see the list of certifications recognised by the University);
  • Transcript of Records in English or Italian - for first and second cycle students only (Bachelor and Master);
  • enrolment certificate in English or Italian - for PhD students only;
  • CV - for PhD students only;
  • Learning Agreement for study or research signed by the home university and by the Welcome Unit in case of mobility for study or by the academic tutor in case of mobility for research.

The Welcome Unit will reply to candidates and provide all the details on the registration and enrolment procedures.

Application deadlines

Students from non-EU countries who must apply for a study visa

  • May 1st - visiting students for the first semester or full academic year;
  • November 1st - visiting students for the second semester.

Students from EU countries

  • June 1st - visiting students for the first semester or full academic year;
  • December 1st - visiting students for the second semester.

The mobility period in the framework of the Visiting Student programme can last up to 12 months.

Enrolment fees

The application fee varies according to the activities the Visiting Student intends to carry out during his/her stay at Ca' Foscari.
The student must make the payment only after his/her admission to the programme (however the payment must be made before the beginning of the semester in which the Visiting Student will stay at Ca' Foscari), following the instructions that the Welcome Unit will provide by e-mail to each candidate.

In order to attend courses at Ca' Foscari, the Visiting Student shall pay the following enrolment fees:

  • EUR 240.00 for each course worth 6 university credits or less;
  • EUR 300.00 for each course worth 7 university credits or more, or for courses including a laboratory activity;

A maximum of 60 university credits can be obtained each academic year.

Visiting Students participating in the IMACS programme are required to pay a special registration fee. More information is available in the section "IMACS - International Master in Cinema Studies Consortium".

For research activities:

  • the enrolment is free of charge for periods of stay under 30 days;
  • the enrolment fee is EUR 200.00 for periods of stay between 31 days and 6 months.

Fees are not refundable.

The enrollment also requires the payment of a revenue stamp worth EUR 16,00.

Facilities and charges

Visiting Students have the same rights and can take advantage of the same facilities as the other students of Ca' Foscari University of Venice: they can take final exams, use the libraries and computer laboratories of the University, take part in the student associations, access the university canteens with a discount, benefit from accident insurance, etc. Moreover they can ask for support in the search of accommodation in Venice through the University’s Housing Office.

Expenses for travel, meals, accommodation, health insurance and medical care, not to mention for books, the eventual VISA and residence permit (for non-EU students) required to enter and stay in Italy are the responsibility of the Visiting Student.

Certifications and transcripts

  • At the end of their study period at Ca' Foscari, Visiting Students who have taken exams at Ca' Foscari University can ask the Welcome Unit for a transcript of records. The document will list the exams passed (min. 18/30) taken, and number of university credits earned.
  • Visiting Students conducting independent research activities can receive a written declaration regarding the research they have completed signed by their Ca' Foscari academic tutor upon request. If requested, said tutor can decide to attend the final thesis defense based on the student's research activity.

Incoming students with special needs

Incoming students with special needs can report any needs by sending an appropriate medical certificate to the Welcome Unit that will contact the Inclusion Unit to request specific support.

Among the available services:

  • initial support in familiarizing with the university buildings where the students’ lessons are held, the libraries and the administration offices;
  • reservation of seats in the classrooms and potential help in obtaining the study materials and lectures notes;
  • support in preparing for the exam and during the exam itself, tutor support (if required);
  • mediation of the office with professors in agreeing on the examination procedure, as follows:

    • additional time,
    • use of PC,
    • enlarged examination text (indicate font and/or typestyle),
    • Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpreter,
    • additional time + use of PC,
    • additional time + enlarged examination text,
    • additional time + Italian Sign Language (LIS) interpreter,
    • oral instead of written exam modality,
    • written instead of oral exam modality.

How to apply for a visa for study purpose - for NON-EU students

In order to get a VISA for study, students form non-EU countries need to register at the Universitaly portal.

This procedure do not concern citizens of Countries in the European Union, as well as from Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and the Swiss Confederation, the Republic of San Marino and the Holy See.

In order to apply to the Universitaly portal, we warmly recommend to check the Guideline in attachment.

Please, does not forget to select: “VISITING STUDENTS AND FREE MOVERS”.

After the completion of the procedure on the Universitaly portal, the Welcome Unit staff will validate the requests which will be then forwarded by the system to the competent diplomatic authorities (Embassies/Consulates). Each VISA application will be processed according to the methods and time frames of each Country diplomatic authority.

Please, mind that the Universitaly application is compulsory but does not guarantee or imply any automatic right to the issuing of the relative study visa, which is the exclusive responsibility of the competent Embassy or Consulate.

Special Agreement with the University of Klagenfurt (Austria)

Ca' Foscari University of Venice has recently signed an agreement with University of Klagenfurt (Austria), which allows students coming from the Austrian University to come to Ca' Foscari for a mobility period, with no tuition fees.

In order to proceed with enrolment, nominated students will have to carry out the procedures required for all Visiting Students, except for the payment.

IMACS - International Master in Cinema Studies Consortium

Ca' Foscari University of Venice is part of the IMACS consortium: thanks to this partnership, the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage welcomes students in the framework of the MA History of Arts and Conservation of Artistic Heritage.

The educational offer of the Department (see attachment) will ensure a broad range of modules as part of the IMACS’ maquette taken from two master programmes, so as to perfectly cover the disciplinary areas characterising the International Master. They are:

In order to apply, students are required to contact their home university coordinators and Ca’ Foscari University coordinators as well as the Counseling and Welcome Unit.

Fees

Visiting students of the IMACS programme are required to pay a registration fee of EUR 200.00 and a EUR 16.00 revenue stamp.
