Choose Europe: Europe's Vision for a Knowledge-Driven Future

The European Commission is investing in the Choose Europe initiative to make Europe a global hub for science, research, and innovation. The initiative focuses on three main priorities:

  1. Protecting scientific freedom by promoting open science, enabling free movement of knowledge and data, and proposing a new European Research Area Act to foster academic freedom.
  2. Boosting investment in research with a €500 million package for 2025–2027, including new long-term 'super grants' under the European Research Council, increased support for researchers relocating to Europe, and enhanced funding for early-career scientists through programmes like Marie Skłodowska-Curie.
  3. Accelerating innovation by launching a European Innovation Act and a Startup and Scaleup Strategy to reduce barriers and attract venture capital for cutting-edge European companies.

Additionally, the initiative aims to simplify access to Europe for top researchers by improving job-matching platforms, speeding up visa processes, and supporting institutions in attracting global talent.

“I am happy to have chosen Ca’ Foscari as the host institution for my ERC Grant. Administration and Faculty struck me from the very beginning for their dynamism and enthusiasm. Timing is everything in the portability of an ERC project and they were extremely experienced and efficient in handling all the operations, but also attentive in creating a welcoming academic environment for me and my team. I was honoured to accept their offer as Associate Professor, which I am sure will allow me to develop my scholarly career at its best”.

"Having a tenure track after my Marie-Curie Global Fellowship in Japan was the best way to concretize the results of my research on pre-modern Japanese literature. The possibility of a stable career in Italy is an opportunity that not every university can offer, and this makes Ca' Foscari among the best centers in Europe for the employment for young researchers. The opportunity to return to Italy while continuing to work in the field of my specialization was the condition that made me decide to decline other offers of employment abroad that I had been offered in the meanwhile. The high specialization and wide range of the research fields covered by the faculty staff here in Venice enabled me with the chance to further deepen the scope of my research while taking advantage of a thriving human network and a stimulating and collaborative working environment that is both international and interdisciplinary."

Edoardo Gerlini, Researcher of Japanese premodern literature at the Department of Asian and North African Studies
