Rete delle Università per lo Sviluppo sostenibile

The RUS - University Network for Sustainable Development, is the first experience of coordination and sharing between all Italian universities committed to the topic of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. Formally established in the CRUI in July 2016, Ca’ Foscari was among the promoting universities.

On 10 July 2017 the Ca' Foscari University of Venice hosted the first conference [IT] of the "Rete delle Università per lo Sviluppo sostenibile". The main topic of the conference is the education in the italian universities for sustainable development, with the presentation of best practices to promote existing projects and to develop new ideas.


The RUS principal goal is the diffusion of culture and good practices of sustainability, whether within or external to the Universities, sharing skills and experience, with the aim to increase the positive impacts in terms of the environmental, ethical, social and economic actions implemented by each university, furthermore enforcing the recognisability and the value of the Italian experience on an International level.

The RUS is set as a model of good practice by extending to other sectors of P.A, education and the general territory, incentivising the development of collaborations with university and city, spreading social innovation over the territory and providing cultural stimuli for the entire country’s system, with the purpose of promoting new national politics for sustainability and sustainable growth that support the dialogue between economic participants.

Institutional Objectives

  • Harmony of institutional activities and improvement of the management of participants environmental and social aspects, as well as through a permanent observatory of the state of sustainability within the Universities and the definition of a shared framework and appropriate metrics for monitoring the environmental, social and economic characteristics of the Universities and the relative activity of benchmarking;
  • Creating a community that is able to develop/spread/transfer/adapt national and International best practises and to adequately represent the groups partecipants and the RUS on a national and International level, with particular attention to the dimensions of sustainability in International ranking and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals;
  • Promoting projects within the network that have already been tested successfully at one or more of the adhering groups and joint development of initiatives relevant to new projects, in the fields of transferring knowledge and understanding, education and activity of management of the Universities with a perspective of learning and the multi-stakeholder and multi-disciplinary fusion.
  • Developing the multidiscipline educational dimension of the university programmes with the purpose to contribute to help the culture of sustainable development grow and to embed the adoption of correct lifestyle choices for students, as well as using new pedagogic approaches and conceiving innovative inclusive initiatives;
  • Training and updating the topics of sustainable development for staff (professors, technical-administrators, collaborators and linguistic experts) in all Italian Universities, also eventually for the professors of other rankings and school grades.
  • Developing initiatives of sensitization and promotion on local, national and international dimensions, regarding stakeholder engagement;
  • Increasing collaborations with public institutes and the world of public and private businesses for the RUS goals regarding the university’s Third Mission.

Who can join

All universities linked to the CRUI and other non-profit organisations, whose institutional goals are coherent with the RUS objectives, can adhere.  Today around 50 universities have shown the intention to adhere to this network, among which are the universities that make up the Promoting Committee, such as Ca’ Foscari, that currently has assumed the role of Organizational Secretary.

The network has a Committee of Coordination for a term of three years, with the responsibility of addressing and monitoring the network’s activities, defining different Work Groups that will be committed to topics considered as a priority in order to achieve the RUS institutional objectives.
