Donato VERARDI

Donato Verardi (PhD) is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Alumnus of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where he was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage (2024–2026). He holds the Italian National Scientific Habilitation (ASN 11/C5) as Associate Professor in the History of Philosophy.

His academic career has combined international research appointments with extensive scholarly collaboration across Europe. He held research positions at the Université Paris-Est Créteil (2017–2020) and the Warburg Institute, University of London (2021–2024). He has also delivered invited lectures and seminars at institutions including Sorbonne University, the University of Orléans, the University of London, the Paideia Institute (New York), and the Universities of Naples L’Orientale, Salento, and Chieti.

His research explores the intellectual history of Renaissance and early modern philosophy, with particular emphasis on Aristotelianism, natural philosophy, natural magic, alchemy, experimental practices, and the history of science and scientific knowledge. His work focuses especially on Giovan Battista Della Porta, the history of secrecy, collaborative knowledge, and the emergence of experimental culture in Renaissance and early modern Europe. His recent monograph, Giovan Battista Della Porta and the Reinvention of Nature. Philosophy, Experience, Artifice (Arcana Naturae Series, Agorà & Co., Lugano, 2026), develops a new interpretation of Della Porta’s natural philosophy, experience, and engagement with the material world.

He is General Editor of the book series The Anthem Impact in History of Natural Magic (Anthem Press) and Editor-in-Chief of Arcana Naturae, an ANVUR Class A journal (SSD 11/C2). He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Istituto Diego Carpitella (2026–2031). Through these editorial and scientific governance roles, he contributes to international research in the history of philosophy, natural philosophy, and the history of science.

His publications include the monographs Logica e Magia (Agorà & Co., 2017), Arti magiche e arti liberali nel Rinascimento (Agorà & Co., 2018), and La Scienza e i Segreti della Natura a Napoli nel Rinascimento (Firenze University Press, 2018). He has also edited several international volumes, including Magical Materials in Renaissance Philosophy, Literature, and Art (with Rebekah Compton, Agorà & Co., 2022), Aristotelianism and Magic in Early Modern Europe (Bloomsbury, 2023), and Hunting Secrets. Giovan Battista Della Porta and the Invention of Experimental Magic (Firenze University Press, 2025). His forthcoming volumes include The Neapolitan Enlightenment. Science, Medicine, and the Exchange of Knowledge (Anthem Press, 2026) and Strange Things. The Extraordinary in the Sciences of Early Modern Europe (Brill, February 2027).

His research has appeared in international journals in the history of philosophy and science, including Ambix, Archives internationales d’histoire des sciences, Revue des Sciences philosophiques et théologiques, and the Bulletin d’histoire et d’épistémologie des sciences de la vie, as well as major Italian journals such as Giornale Critico della Filosofia Italiana, Rinascimento, and Bruniana & Campanelliana.
