WORK ACTIVITIES
Research Activities
During the last twenty-five years I have been particularly interested in the applications of isotopic geochemistry to the study of snow samples and snow-ice cores drilled in Antarctica and to the study of past climate reconstructions by means of the determination of the isotopic composition of oxygen ( δ18O) and hydrogen (δD) in the frame of national and international research projects funded by the PNRA (National Research Program in Antarctica) and the EU.
I have participated in deep drilling projects in Antarctica (EPICA, TALDICE), in the mapping of the isotopic composition of Antarctic surface snow (ITASE) and I have coordinated paleoclimatology projects focused on Holocene (ESF-HOLOCLIP) and the last 2000 years (PAGES Antarctica2k, PNRA-IPICS-2kyr-Italy), and I have been principal investigator for Italy of the international EAIIST project, for carrying out a scientific traverse in Antarctica between the Concordia station and the South Pole. I am directly involved (WP leader) in the Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice Core: 1.5 Myr of greenhouse gas climate feedbacks (BE-OIC) project, recently funded by the EU.
I have participated in several research projects admitted to funding on the basis of competitive peer review evaluations: 3 with a role as Principal Investigator (or Coordinator), 13 with the role of Research Unit Responsible and 15 as participant.
These scientific activities led to 151 scientific publications in international journals of which 132 in indexed journals with evaluation according to the peer review system (Scopus: h index 46, number of total citations 12.355) to the presentation of scientific communications at various national and international conferences (more than 230 communications presented at conferences, as author or co-author), also by invitation (18), to the organization as a convener or in the scientific committees of national and international conferences (19) and supervising PhD students.
At my department, I co-ordinate a research group, Ice Core and Environmental Geochemistry Lab, consisting of an associate professor, two research technicians, two research fellows, three PhD students and master's and bachelor's degree students (December 2025).
Editorial activity: Associated editor of the journal "Climate of the Past", Copernicus publisher.
National and international prizes and awards for research activities
- In 2003 I received the "Felice Ippolito" Research Award awarded by the National Research Program in Antarctica and by the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei for the high quality of scientific research carried out in Antarctica which provided fundamental contributions to understanding the history of the climate of the Earth.
- The TALDICE project in 2010 received the title of "Ambassador of Biodiversity" from MIUR for scientific excellence.
- The EPICA project in 2007 received the award "Descartes Prize": European Science Awards, Descartes Prize for Collaborative, Transnational Research.
