The students, coming from all over the world and with very different backgrounds and degrees (from undergraduates to Ph.D.), will be provided with general notions of history and historiography inherent to Venice in the period from 1797 onto the present, regarding different problems and periods.
N.B. This class is organised by the Ca' Foscari School for International Education (SIE). Students cannot attend classes or take exams if they are not officially enrolled in the course. For further information on the SIE English-taught courses for exchange students, please visit this webpage: https://www.unive.it/pag/35228/
At the end of the eight weeks, the students will have a diachronic view of the history of Venice from the fall of the Republic 1797 to the present, through the various dominations, French and Austrian, with the parenthesis of the Republic of San Marco, in 1848-1849, until the entry into the Kingdom of Italy in 1866, through the Great War and its bombings, and then fascism, the industrialization of Porto Marghera, World War II, until the Seventies, with the problems given by pollution and lagoon disruption, without neglecting tourism and its current manifestations.
At the same time, they will also have gained specific knowledge of sources, tools (through visits to city libraries), methodological considerations and specific topics and Venetian aspects (such as local architecture, the lagoon ecosystem, glass excellence).
Students are not required of any pre requisite.
The course illustrates Venice's shift in political and cultural relevance from the fall of the Venetian Republic to the present day, its specific problems and its still current peculiarities.
Attending students will be required to read the chapters covering the period 1797-present from Dennis Romano's book, “Venice The Remarkable History of the Lagoon City,” Oxford-New York, Oxford University Press, 2024. pp. 485-608, plus the weekly readings, and to participate in the tours, guided and independent, as well as make presentations on the material indicated.
Non-attending students will be required to read the chapters covering the 1797-present period from Dennis Romano's book, “Venice The Remarkable History of the Lagoon City,” Oxford-New York, Oxford University Press, 2024. pp. 485-608, plus one book of their choice from the General Bibliography uploaded to Moodle and to be reported no later than April 15.
All students enrolled in the course will take individual oral exams in the period between May 12 and 14, 2025.
oral
The oral examinations will follow the 30/18 score required in order to pass, as per university guidelines.
Depending on the level of knowledge of the students, reading groups will be provided with material handed in each time, presentations by students (single or in groups, depending on the number of students), class debates, and projections (of clips) of films and documentaries.
