Viviana MAURO

Viviana Mauro earned her PhD in Modern Languages, Cultures and Societies (SSD: ANGL-01/C - English Language, Translation and Linguistics) in 2026 at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. Her doctoral thesis, Communicating Italy to International Audiences: A Multimodal Study of English-Language Tourism Promotion by Italian Institutions (1919-1959), examines Italian institutional tourism communication addressed to Anglophone audiences in the first half of the twentieth century. The thesis was awarded an “excellent” evaluation by the examination committee (prof. Anthony Pym, prof. Andrea Rizzi, dr. Giuseppe De Bonis).

She holds a Master’s degree in Interpreting and Translation for Special Purposes (2019) from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and a Bachelor’s degree in Comparative Languages and Humanities (2016) from the University of Naples “L’Orientale”. Her working languages are English and Chinese.

Since 2019, she has taught English language and translation at both undergraduate and postgraduate level at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where she has worked as an adjunct professor, academic tutor and teaching assistant.

She is a member of several research groups at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, including the PRIN 2020 project DIETALY (Destination Italy in English Translation over the Years). She also collaborates with research groups within the Department of Linguistic and Comparative Cultural Studies (MUR Department of Excellence) focusing on cultural, linguistic and intermodal adaptation, with particular attention to tourism and cultural heritage communication and to issues of accessibility (SSD: ANGL-01/C).

Her research interests lie at the intersection of tourism studies, translation studies and multimodal analysis, with a strong diachronic focus. She is particularly interested in the role of language and translation in the international promotion of tourist destinations. She has experience in the design and management of research databases on history and translation studies, including HITRADE (https://pric.unive.it/projects/hitrade/home) and DIETALY (https://pric.unive.it/projects/dietaly/database).

She is also interested in tourism communication addressed to young international audiences, especially in relation to accessibility and inclusion. In this context, she has designed and coordinated peer-to-peer, project-based learning activities within the MA course Specialised Translation for Tourism, Accessibility and Inclusion.
