Giulia Fiorani
Associate Professor of Organic Chemistry
Department of Molecular Sciences and Nanosystems
Ca' Foscari University of Venice, Italy

Short Bio

Giulia Fiorani was born in Rome in 1983. She holds a BSc (2004, cum laude) and MSc (2006, cum laude) in Chemical Sciences from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, where she also obtained her PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2010. Her doctoral research focused on the synthesis of ionic liquids and their application as solvents in C–C bond-forming reactions, under the supervision of Prof. Valeria Conte.

During her PhD, she completed international research stays at the University of Nottingham (UK, Jan–Apr 2008, Prof. Simon Woodward) and as a Marie Curie Early Stage Fellow at the QUILL Research Centre, Queen’s University Belfast (UK, Apr–Aug 2008, Profs. Kenneth R. Seddon and Christopher R. Strauss).

From 2010 to 2012, she held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Padua (Italy), working on the synthesis and applications of hybrid polyoxometalates (with Prof. Mauro Carraro, Prof. Marcella Bonchio, and Dr. Alberto Figoli). In 2012–2013, she joined the Department of Molecular Sciences and Nanosystems at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice for a postdoc focused on the synthesis and application of linear organic carbonates (Profs. Maurizio Selva and Alvise Benedetti).

In 2014, she was awarded a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship (2014–2016), conducting a project on the synthesis of structurally complex biomass-derived cyclic organic carbonates at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ, Spain), in the group of Prof. Arjan W. Kleij.

Between 2016 and 2017, she worked in the field of polymer chemistry and catalytic polymerization in the group of Prof. Charlotte K. Williams, first at Imperial College London and then at the University of Oxford.

From 2017 to 2020, she was a Fixed-Term Researcher in Organic Chemistry at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. Since November 2020, she has been Associate Professor at the same institution. As of August 2024, she also serves as the Rector’s Delegate for Knowledge Transfer.

Research Interests

Her research focuses on the development of synthetic methodologies and catalytic processes for the preparation of novel functional molecules and materials from renewable resources.
