Final exam

The final exam requires you to prepare a short paper (length will depend on the number of credits earned) in agreement with a professor (supervisor) who may eventually be flanked by another professor (advisor) – appointed by the teaching coordination body – during the final stage of assessment and according to the procedures laid down for the study programme concerned.

Depending on the specific subject area concerned, the final paper may also consist of a written report of the results of an experimental research project eventually carried out with the support of internship/traineeship activities.

You will be presented with your graduation diploma on Graduation Day.

Calculation of degree grade

The degree grade is calculated by adding the grade of the final exam and eventual bonuses to the weighted average marks calculated in hundred-and-tenths. Supervisors may allocate 0 to 6 points during the assessment of the final paper. The attribution of an eventual bonus is calculated automatically according to the rules laid out in the attached table.

The award of honours to the final grade is at the discretion of the supervisor.

Graduation and Graduation Day

You will obtain your degree when your supervisor, after evaluating your final thesis, registers your final exam. The time span during which your supervisor can register your final grades is the deadline called “registration of final exam”. As soon as your supervisor registers your final exam, you will receive an automatic email through your Cà Foscari address with your graduation mark.  Starting from that moment, you have obtained your degree (you are a graduate).

Graduation day is an event that has no relevance as far as obtaining the degree is concerned (graduation); it is a way to celebrate, a ceremony during which they give you your original diploma.

Master's degree dissertations scheduled for the extraordinary session will be held in person, in full compliance with the safety conditions laid down in the Ministerial Decrees on health emergencies.

The following categories of students may be authorised to present their dissertation remotely:

  • students with disabilities recognised under Art. 3, paragraph 3 of Italian Law 104/92: request to be sent to  disabilita@unive.it;
  • frail students suffering from serious pathologies or with a certified immunodepression condition who cannot attend classes in presence (Ministerial Order No. 134 of 09/10/2020); the condition of frailty is assessed and certified by the General Practitioner in liaison with the local Prevention Department: request to be sent to  disabilita@unive.it;

For information and assistance, please contact the Campus office which is indicated on the website of your degree program > Presentation > Contacts.

  • international students (i.e., students in possession of a qualification obtained abroad and with foreign citizenship) who are objectively unable to present their dissertation in person because they currently reside in countries with restrictions on mobility. Request to be sent to  onlineexams@unive.it accompanied by appropriate documentation proving current residence (e.g., certificate of residence or self-certification validated by the local Italian authority, Embassy or Consulate).

The request, together with the documentation required for each case, must be sent:

  • by 18 May 2022 as regards the extraordinary session - second window (1 - 15 June 2022);
  • by 10 June 2022 as regards the summer session (11 - 23 July 2022).

Sanitising gel dispensers are available at every entrance to the University, and are also present at the entrances to the classrooms. Masks are available at the gatehouses for guests who may not have them.

A laptop will be available in the classroom for projecting any slides and for any remote connections for authorised students. Everything necessary for sanitising the laptop itself and the desk will also be available: students are required to sanitise their hands before and after using the personal computer.

Please note that, in the University, wearing a mask is:

Compulsory

  • for all persons present in classrooms, libraries and laboratories;
  • for all persons carrying out their activities in library reading rooms and lecture halls;
  • for participation in events, conferences and congresses (FFP2 mask);
  • in cases where social distancing cannot be ensured and in the event of crowds/crowded rooms;
  • for those sharing a room with so-called 'frail' staff.

Strongly recommended

  • for staff in contact with the public (so-called 'counter');
  • for staff working in rooms shared with one or more workers, even if there are only two of them, unless there is enough space to exclude crowding;
  • during face-to-face meetings;
  • in the presence of any symptoms affecting the respiratory tract;
  • in lifts.

Please also note that no preventive quarantine is required for asymptomatic, even unvaccinated, subjects following close contact with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 positive subjects. In this case, the affected person must wear an FFP2 mask within ten days of the last contact. The rules on self-monitoring have been clarified in the Italian Ministry of Health circular of 30 March 2022

Final exam

When drawing up their thesis students will require an in-depth knowledge of the methods used in their disciplinary area eventually supported by IT tools and methodologies. The final product must be original, and based on exhaustive documentation and scientific research.

The thesis defence takes place before a committee made up of university professors and experts who will jointly assess the quality of the thesis and propose a final grade.

You will be presented with your graduation diploma  when you defend your thesis (second-cycle and master’s degree programmes, and degree programmes established under the old university system);
