Double and Joint Degree

An agreement with the Université de Tours is active, under which the two universities will recognize to the selected students, at the conclusion of the studies, the double title of "Master’s Degree of Art in Philology and Italian literature" (Ca' Foscari University of Venice) and "Master 1 and 2 Etudes italiennes et Histoire de l’art - mention Etudes italiennes” (University of Tours).

Access to the programme

Open admission subject to assessment of minimum requirements.

Quota reserved to non-EU students residing outside Italy: 5 seats, 2 of which are reserved for a Chinese student living in China, under the Marco Polo Project.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to this Master's Degree Programme students must possess a proper individual educational background and the minimum curricular requirements. A certified knowledge of English at minimum level B2 is also required.

Admission with international qualification

Applicants with international qualification must have obtained a bachelor’s degree that is the result of at least 3 years of study. The preliminary evaluation of the qualification is mandatory. Procedures and deadlines are available on the dedicated online platform.
International qualification will be evaluated by the designated teaching committee after the pre-evaluation procedure carried out on the online platform.

Course overview

The Master's degree programme offers a solid specialised education (with a historical-methodological focus) in linguistic-philological and literary studies, shaping experts in Italian literature, Italian linguistics as well as Italian and Romance philology, with a focus on European literature.

At the core of the the educational programme is an in-depth study of the critical methods that are crucial for reading primary, literary and documentary sources, but also an increased awareness of the the dialectical relationship between the past and the present, the critical approach to broad and complex problems, also of a social nature, starting from the cultural background that emerges from the texts. Depending on the chosen curriculum, students may expand their knowledge and competencies in the Mediaeval/Renaissance field (Italian and Romance), the modern/contemporary (Italian) period or favour a broader European perspective.

Occupational profiles

Education geared towards honing basic skills to solve complex problems is of primary importance in today's job market. Graduates in the humanities are therefore often able to work their way up to management positions in public and private enterprises of all kinds. In addition to their general preparation, Master's degree graduates also possess more specific skills, thanks to which they will be able to find professional employment in publishing houses, editorial offices, press offices, communication companies and, in general, companies that require an area dedicated to communication; they will also be able to find employment in libraries, museums, archives, documentation centres and foundations and public and private bodies involved in the protection, enhancement and promotion of historical, cultural and artistic heritage. Graduates with a sufficient number of credits in the relevant sector groups will be able to take part in the admission tests for secondary teaching training courses, as provided for by current legislation.

The skills acquired will also enable graduates to play an active role and to find a professional position in companies and public and private bodies, both national and international, dealing with the promotion and dissemination of cultural heritage and taking care of every aspect of it – from the identification of themes to the organisation of promotion initiatives.

Examination assessment and graduation

The formative activity consists of lectures, exercises/seminars, workshop activities and internships; the acquired skills will be verified through written and oral examinations.

The final degree exam will consist of creating a piece of written work that is the product o fan in-depth personal analysis of content coherent to the formative course. It can be in the form of a critical review, the discussion of a scientific question,  or a bibliographic review of a specific topic. It could also concern the analysis of a source – edited or unedited – or propose the edition of the same source. The work must be carried out under the watch of a supervisor; the written work will then be discussed in a brief interview with the supervisor and/or a scholar chosen as a reviser.
