Mandatory Health and Safety Training
Starting with the 42nd cycle, all PhD students are required to complete the following mandatory health and safety training:
- general training: 4 hours in duration and not subject to an expiration date
- specific training: of varying duration (4, 8 or 12 hours) depending on the risk level and subject to renewal every five years.
The training must be completed before the start of activities; failure to comply will prevent the Phd student from beginning the scheduled activities.
Once the enrolment is finalized, the relevant offices will send PhD students an invitation to the general training course and the specific training course, based on the risk level associated with their academic and research activities.
Common activities organized by the Phd Degrees Office
The PhD Degrees Office organizes many common activities for all the PhD programmes, such as disciplinary and inter-disciplinary seminars, linguistic and IT training, as well as focuses in the field of European and international research and of results and copyright enhancement.

Specific educational activities of the PhD programme
From a.y. 2025/2026
The Doctoral Program lasts for three years.
Didactic programme
The first and second year are characterized by an advanced learning program. The department offers a series diversified activities (lectures, seminars, presentations, workshops, etc.) and promotes integration of PhD students. Most of the courses and seminars can be given in videoconference mode.
The breakdown of educational activities in the three years is as follows:
- Year 1 and 2:
- 60 hours of educational activities
- 20 hours of highly specialized in-depth seminars in the relevant fields
- at least 3 among the educational activities offered by the University Doctoral Office should be added to the seminars in the first two years. The Athenaeum Security course is compulsory, but is not included in the above 3 activities.
- Year 3: course attendance is not expected, in order to allow doctoral students to devote themselves entirely to the conclusion of the research project, the writing of the thesis, and the presentation of the results obtained in prestigious venues where to get feedback from the scientific community
The choice of seminars and activities should be agreed with the mentors and approved by the faculty. Each Ph.D. and Ph.D. student may also carry out "Other Training Activities" (e.g. lectures, classes, university courses, see below) which, given the positive opinion of the mentors and the approval of the College of Teachers, may partially replace or supplement the hours of seminars and activities.
Research programme
PhD students are encouraged to develop part of their scientific program in foreign institutions, preferably in the second year. The minimum recommended period for the internship is three months.
Internationalization is one of the priorities of the PhD Program: the PhD Course offers opportunities of study and cultural and professional growth in a prestigious network of universities.
Participation in top international conferences is recommended and financially supported.
