Short Bio
I am a coastal geologist and Full Professor at Ca' Foscari University of Venice. I study how sea level has changed in the past to better understand what climate change will mean for our coastlines. Along coasts around the world, I look for ancient beaches, fossil cliffs and uplifted coral reefs. These are traces the sea left behind when the climate was warmer than today, and I compare them with computer models to understand how much sea level rose or fell, and why. I also study today's coasts: beach erosion, storm surges and extreme waves, and how shorelines will change in the coming decades.
I have worked at Columbia University in New York and at the University of Bremen in Germany. In 2018 I was awarded a European Research Council (ERC) grant for the WARMCOASTS project. My research has taken me into the field in more than fifteen countries, from the Bahamas to the Maldives and from French Polynesia to South Africa.
I'm a surfer, and my passion for the ocean goes beyond my university work. I host the podcast Storie di mare ("Ocean Stories"), which tells the stories of explorers, scientists and surfers who have devoted their lives to the ocean. I also share science on social media (Instagram: @alessio_rovere) and at public events.
