PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Accomplished PhD Sociologist and Academic Leader with 20 years of experience spanning the Global South and Europe, currently leading a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) fellowship. A specialist in transnational migration, sociology of development, gender and sexuality, and family sociology, my career is defined by a commitment to dismantling social inequalities through Applied Projects and Research, transformative pedagogy, "Team Science," and community-engaged interventions. I bring a distinguished record of academic leadership and curriculum renewal, having served as Chairman of a Sociology Department where I managed a diverse team of 06 full time and 70+ part time academic staff and oversaw degree schemes for thousands of students. Besides an expert on sexuality and human rights capacity building, I am also a volunteer Mentor from American Sociological Association Platform to guide young researchers.

Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology, 2019; University of Karachi – Karachi; Dissertation: “Role of Life Skills Based Education (Sexuality Education) in Empowerment of Adolescents in Pakistan”.  The research examined how comprehensive sexuality education enables adolescents to navigate gender norms, develop agency, and make informed decisions. The findings informed national-level programming and policy in Pakistan.

Master of Philosophy in Anthropology, 2009; Quaid-i-Azam University – Islamabad; Dissertation: “A Qualitative study of Garbage and Rag Picking Children in Rawalpindi”. Ethnographic research on child labour, structural violence, and urban poverty, centring the perspectives of marginalized Afghan migrant children in Pakistan.

Master of Science in Sociology, 2004; Allama Iqbal Open University; Dissertation: “Effect of Intimate Relations on Learning of Criminal Behavior Amongst Juvenile Prisoners in Rawalpindi Prison”. Project: “Transnational Fatherhood, Negotiating Masculinity and Parental Care in the Digital Communication Era”

·        Leading an MSCA-funded research project examining the interconnections among migration, masculinity, emotions of love and care, and fatherhood, with specific attention to how digital communication technologies shape everyday parenting practices across borders. The project investigates how transnational fathers negotiate masculinity at familial, workplace, and societal levels, and how they perform assigned and self-defined responsibilities of fatherhood while navigating distance, precarity, and shifting expectations.

·        This research focuses on power structures, social inequalities, and the transformation of family life in contexts of migration. It engages with critical questions about gender, care, and digital mediation, and centers perspectives from the Global South (Pakistani migrants in Italy). The project builds international scholarly collaboration and produces research outputs intended for high-quality international publication, embodying the principles of Team Science.

·        As Principal Investigator awarded a highly competitive national grant, €13K (approx). I directed a mixed-method intervention study that identified systemic barriers in the criminal justice system. Findings were presented to policy stakeholders to improve institutional capacity and judicial efficacy in Pakistan.

Nutrition International | Youth-Led Qualitative Assessment. Duration: December 2024 – March 2025

·        As PI/ Lead Researcher of €45K (approx.), I employed innovative visual methodologies (Photovoice) to evaluate Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) effectiveness. This participatory approach empowered adolescent beneficiaries to co-produce data, directly informing the scaling of national nutrition programs.

Nutrition International & Western Sydney University |Adolescent Centre Nutrition Indicators (CAN-I) | Aug 2025 – Dec 2025

·        Lead the Youth Participatory Research (YPR) component of €35K (approx.), for the CAN-I Pilot for the Adolescent Centre Nutrition Indicators (CAN-I) Pilot in Pakistan, a multi-institutional initiative led by the Interdisciplinary Centre for the Study of Adolescents at Western Sydney University and Nutrition International Canada. Established a standardized set of adolescent nutrition indicators that bridge academic metrics with lived community experiences.

Nutrition International | Maternal Nutrition Campaign Project. Duration: July 2022 – February 2023

·        Won this competitive research consultancy of €20K (approx.). As Lead Researcher, I provided the evidence base for a national maternal nutrition campaign, identifying critical knowledge gaps among Health Care Professionals (HCPs) to optimize frontline service delivery.

Created the institutional framework for gender inclusion in provincial governance by developing, Strategic Plan for Social Welfare Department and Gender Inclusion Strategic Plan for the Planning & Development Department, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

·        Nutrition International (2021): Research assignment of €20K (approx.). Conducted a Sex and Gender-Based Analysis (SGBA) of Maternal and Newborn Health Nutrition programs in Pakistan. The pioneering study provided institutionalized gender-sensitive metrics in newborn health nutrition monitoring as well as guided other SGBA research studies in Asia and Africa
