Gli studenti che intendono laurearsi con me devono:
- Avere sostenuto positivamente l'esame relativo alla materia nella quale intendono laurearsi. Dopo aver sostenuto l'esame, va esposta la vostra intenzione. Posso fare eccezioni per studenti di altri corsi di laurea.
- Contattarmi per tempo: potrei avere altre tesi in corso o altri impegni. In linea di massima è sempre buona norma contattare un docente sei mesi prima per una laurea Triennale e nove mesi/un anno prima per una laurea Magistrale. Si noti che questa "buona norma" è condivisa collegialmente dai musicologi De Zorzi, Gazit, Ottomano.
- Presentarsi con un’idea degli argomenti che si desidera approfondire: da qui si apre una discussione.
Una volta scelto insieme a me il tema di ricerca, perché la tesi sia accettata definitivamente è necessario presentare:
- Una scaletta di lavoro / indice provvisorio dove chiarire in modo schematico come si intende articolare la tesi;
- Una bibliografia quanto più ampia e organizzata possibile;
- Eventuali immagini di riferimento.
La tesi va redatta in Word (file .doc oppure .docx) non in altri formati. Per la stesura della tesi si seguano le norme esposte nei due documenti allegati.

IMPORTANTE: Lo studente resta in contatto con il docente: dopo due mesi di silenzio da parte del candidato mi considero libero da ogni impegno.
IMPORTANTE: È compito dei laureandi il controllo delle scadenze burocratiche relative alla presentazione delle domande e all'inserimento (upload) della tesi stessa.
IMPORTANTE: La consegna del materiale elaborato dai laureandi in capitoli successivi andrà concordata per tempo con me (via email o durante il ricevimento).
FONDAMENTALE: Posso accettare la domanda di laurea avendo ricevuto solo uno o due capitoli ma dovrò poi ricevere la tesi COMPLETA almeno due settimane PRIMA della data prevista per l'inserimento/upload. In caso contrario respingerò la domanda di laurea.

Il 23 settembre è partito un nuovo corso intitolato "Musicologia Transculturale" (FT0608) che sostituisce il precedente "Fondamenti di Etnomusicologia" (FT0434).
È passato diverso tempo dal lontano 1953, quando è stato coniato il termine "Etnomusicologia": la nuova titolazione del corso rispecchia le linee di ricerca contemporanee. L'approccio della "Musicologia Transculturale", infatti, supera le barriere e gli steccati tra Musicologia Storica, Etnomusicologia, discipline demo-etno-antropologiche (DEA) e Popular Music Studies integrando le esperienze maturate da discipline come l'Antropologia della Musica, la Sociologia della Musica, la Semiologia della Musica.
Più in particolare, il corso prenderà in esame: 1. il particolare approccio dell'etnomusicologia (EM) in rapporto alla musicologia storica (MS), alle discipline demo-etno-antropologiche (DEA) e ai recenti studi di musiche popolari contemporanee ("Popular Music Studies"); 2. il concetto emico di musica; 3. l'opposizione suono/rumore; 4. l'intenzionalità dell'agire musicale; 5. la particolare temporalità degli eventi sonori; 6. la presenza di regole per l'organizzazione dei suoni; 7. la presenza e l'uso di oggetti e tecnologie per la musica; 8. le molte organologie sorte sul pianeta; 9. il progetto immanente all’agire musicale; 10. le funzioni attribuite alla produzione musicale.
Durante il corso ci si soffermerà su alcuni tipici metodi di indagine musicologica quali la ricerca sul campo, la registrazione e l'analisi dei brani registrati, l'uso della videocamera, l'indagine audiovisuale.
Come ogni anno, vi saranno iniziative connesse al corso, come la rassegna cafoscarina "Incroci in Musica", per le quali si consiglia la frequenza.

Curriculum vitae
Musician and Ethnomusicology PhD, his main research areas are the Ottoman-Turkish, Iranian and Central Asian traditions of classical and Sufi music. He alternates between field research, writing, teaching, concert activity (ney flute in the Ottoman-Turkish tradition) and artistic direction of different music programmes.
- He graduated in 1999 in Ethnomusicology at the University “Ca’Foscari” of Venice with the thesis: “Ascolta il ney com’esso narra la sua storia. Uno strumento e le sue implicazioni. (‘Listen to the Ney how it Tells its Story’. An Instrument and its Implications’). Professor Maurizio Agamennone (Ethnomusicology); Professor Giampiero Bellingeri (Turkish Language and Literature).
- In 2001 he received a DÉA (Diplôme d’Études Approfondies) with EHÉSS (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales) of Paris with the thesis: Le ney dans la Turquie contemporaine. Situation actuelle d’un instrument « passéiste ». (‘The ney in contemporary Turkey. Actual Situation of a ‘Traditionalist’ Instrument’). Professor Gerard Delille (Anthropology); Professor Jean During (Ethnomusicology).
- In 2006 he received a PhD in “History and Analisis of the Musical Cultures” at the Department of Glottoantropological and Musical Studies of the University “La Sapienza” of Rome, with the thesis: Gli zikr della confraternita sufi yasawiyya nella valle del Fergana (Uzbekistân, Kazakhstân, Kirgyzstân). (‘The zikr of the Yasawiyya Sufi Brotherhood in the Fergana Valley -Uzbekistân, Kazakhstân, Kirgyzstân-’). Professor Francesco Giannattasio (Ethnomusicology). Teaching
Teaching Activity
From 2001 to 2007 he taught Etnomusicology at the Ethnomusicology Department of the State Conservatory “Cesare Pollini” of Padua. In the Fall of 2007 the experimental Department closed.
From 2007 to 2011 he taught ney flute at the State Music Conservatory “Arrigo Pedrollo” of Vicenza.
From 2006-2011 he taught in some seminars at the Eurasian Studies Department of the “Ca’ Foscari” University of Venice.
In 2010/2011 he taught in a regular course entitled "Ottoman Culture and Society", entirely devoted to Ottoman Music, at the Eurasian Studies Department of the “Ca’ Foscari” University of Venice, Italy.
Academic Progress
After winning a national competition, since December 2011 he is Researcher (RU) of Ethnomusicology (L-Art 08) at the University "Ca' Foscari" of Venice.
In February 2015 he was awarded the national scientific qualification (ASN) to Associate Professor. In December 2018 he was appointed Associate Professor (PA).
In October 2022 he obtained the national scientific qualification (ASN) to Full Professor (PO).
Other activities
He participated to many conferences, symposiums and seminars, national and international. He ideated and realized himself many conferences, namely with the 'Giorgio Cini' Foundation, the University 'Ca' Foscari', the Theatre 'La Fenice' of Venice and with the Festival MiTO Settembre Musica.
Among these many activities, worthy of note the yearly ney flute seminars directed by m.o Kudsi Erguner and codirected by himself that took place at the 'Giorgio Cini' Foundation from 2005 to 20012.
From 2012 began the Bîrûn Project, under the artistic direction of Kudsî Erguner in collaboration with Giovanni De Zorzi and Giovanni Giuriati, involving the Fondazione Cini’s Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies (IISMC) and the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage (DFBC) of the Venice University Ca' Foscari. Bîrûn takes place in several phases: a call for scholarships for young musicians, a study day at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, a week-long workshop to study and rehearse a chosen repertoire, a professional recording of the repertoire for publication (which led to the publication of six CD-books by Nota Edizioni https://www.nota.it/categoria-prodotto/intersezioni-musicali/), and a public performance. As a ney flute player he carries out considerable concert activity, in Italy and abroad, as a soloist or leading the Ensemble Marâghî.
He is actively involved in cultural radio broadcasting, particularly with RAI RadioTre.
Since 2018 he has been a Nominator for the Aga Khan Music Awards, awards given to emerging musicians by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN).
Since 2024 he is co/investigator of the study group dedicated to the art musics (maqām) of the Middle Eastern and Central Asian world entitled 'maqām beyond Nation.' The project won an ERC Horizon award that become, post Brexit, UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) International. The group consists of: Rachel Harris, Principal Investigator (University of London, SOAS); Giovanni De Zorzi Co/Investigator (University of Venice, Ca' Foscari); Polina Dessiatnitchenko (Waseda University, Tokyo); Saeid Kordmafi (University of London, SOAS); Mukaddas Mijit (Université Libre de Bruxelles) with Aziz Isa Elkun (Independent Scholar) and Rosa Vercoe (Administration). In September 2025, he was appointed artistic director of the ‘Incroci in Musica’ festival, an initiative organised by Ca' Foscari University of Venice, Fondazione di Venezia, Fondazione Università Ca' Foscari in collaboration with Veneto Jazz.
