Curriculum vitae
Eugenia Liosatou (New York) graduated in “Lettere” from the University of Crete (2002). She holds a Master's Degree in Medieval History from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, a TFA Diploma (Tirocinio Formativo Attivo) qualifying her to teach Foreign Language and Civilization (Modern Greek) in Italian schools, and a Ph.D. in Modern Languages, Cultures and Societies (Modern Greek).
She has also obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) as an Associate Professor in the competition sector 10/D2 (Greek Language and Literature).
Her main research interests include the teaching of Modern Greek as a foreign language, the evolution of the language from Ancient to Modern Greek, comparative literature, and Modern Greek literary production from the 18th century onward. Furthermore, she conducts studies on the historical-literary relations between the Republic of Venice and the Greek territories of the Stato da Mar, such as the Morea, the Ionian Islands, and Crete.
Teaching Activity and Academic Appointments
Since 2012, she has been an adjunct professor of Modern Greek Language at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and, since 2022, an adjunct professor of Modern Greek Language and Literature at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”.
She is a cultrice della materia (subject matter expert) at the Department of Humanities of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice for the three-year periods 2015-2018, 2022-2025, and 2025-2028. Previously, she conducted Modern Greek language tutorials at the University of Padua (2009-2010) and language laboratory sessions at the University of Naples “L’Orientale” (2016-2018).
She serves as supervisor and co-supervisor for numerous Bachelor's and Master's theses focusing on Modern Greek language and literature, translation, and the musical tradition of the Heptanese at both universities. She served as the ANILS (National Association of Foreign Language Teachers) delegate for Modern Greek from 2019 to 2023 and held the position of adjunct faculty representative on the Board of the Department of Humanities at Ca’ Foscari (from November 2023 to 2024).
Since 2018, she has been the coordinator of the Examination Center for the Certification of Attainment in Modern Greek, held in collaboration with the Centre for the Greek Language in Thessaloniki (KEG).
Research, Projects, and Public Engagement (PCTO)
She had a research assignment focused on teaching tools for Greek language instruction at Ca’ Foscari University (september 2025) and is a member of several international research groups. These include the university-funded Spin 2024 project “Writing, Reading and Speaking Greek in Venice” (2024-2025); the Erasmus+ project “ArchaeoSchool for the Future: a sustainability approach (Italy, Greece, Spain)” (2015-2018); the project “Il greco nelle scuole del Veneto fra antico e futuro” (2010-2013) at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (in collaboration with Classical Lyceums of the Veneto Region); and the “Antica Messene” project at the “G. Fracastoro” State Scientific Lyceum in Verona (2017).
Within student orientation and public engagement frameworks (PCTO, Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation), she launched the project “From Greek to Modern Greek. A pedagogical journey through the living language and culture of present-day Greece” with the University “L’Orientale” (2024-2025 and 2026-2027) and participated in the project “It’s not Greek to me: A practical introduction to the (Modern) Greek language” with Ca’ Foscari University (2020-2025).
Scientific and Editorial Committees
She is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the editorial series “Neoellenica-Venetica” and, in 2026, performed peer review duties for the academic journal Studi di Glottodidattica (SdG). Furthermore, she serves as an expert member of the examination board for the assessment of the Greek language within the national qualifying examination for Tourist Guides for the 2026-2027 biennium, organized by the Ministry of Tourism (sessions on October 6, 21, and 28, 2026).
She was a member of the Scientific Committee for the Study Day “Albania between East and West: borders, interaction, identity” (2025) and for the seminar series “Albania, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania: an intercultural network and its specificities” (April-May 2024), both organized by the University of Naples “L’Orientale”. She was also a member of the scientific committee for the conferences “Attraversamenti Mediterranei” (University “L’Orientale”, 2024) and the “IX National Conference of Modern Greek Studies” (Venice-Padova, 2023).
Publications
She has a lot of scientific publications to her credit and regularly participates as a speaker in conferences on Modern Greek history, language, and literature. She is the author of the monograph Manthos Ioannou, Storia della sciagura e schiavitù della Morea and co-editor of the volumes Libri, storie, personas e parole fra Venezia e la Grecia. Miscellanea di scritti in memoria di Mario Vitti (with F. Scalora, Ca’ Foscari University Press) and Attraversamenti Mediterranei (with M. Borrelli, S. Piscopo, Bl. Suta, UniorPress).
In lexicography, she contributed as a compiler to the Dizionario Greco Moderno-Italiano e Italiano-Greco Moderno (Zanichelli, 2013) and as a linguistic reviewer for the Dizionario Greco compatto (Zanichelli, 2017).
