Francesca ROHR

Francesca Rohr Vio is Full Professor in Roman History at the Ca' Foscari University of Venice. She has held numerous institutional appointments. Her research focuses on the political history of the Late Republican and Proto-Imperial age, with particular reference to the processes of political communication and to the new protagonists of the age, such as viri militares and matronae. As Rector’s Deputy for Career Guidance and Counselling she contributes to develop the Ca’ Foscari Gender Equality Plan.

Track record
The Research focuses on two main topics:
1) The political history of the Late Republican and Proto-Imperial age
The goal is to study the protagonists of this new political phase and the new ways of their mutual relationship and action: Viri militares (Research-team “Fra repubblica e principato”. Coordination: F. Rohr, R. Cristofoli-Università di Perugia, A. Galimberti-Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano); Matronae. The research porject “Matrona in re publica perita: Political Women’s Activities in late Republican and Augustan Rome” aims to establish the spaces and modes of political female action in the crisis of the late Republic, the context in which the particular political conjunctures and the physical separation of the men from institutional centers of power allowed opportunities for intervention of matrons in the political arena. In this situation they redefined the female models, with a valorization of the legendary tradition of monarchical and proto republican ages and with a strong resizing of exempla meso Republicans, as the criterion for comparison only for denigration. The Project “Roma al femminile, tra storia antica e presente” (2020-), Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities – VeDPH, Ca’ Foscary University of Venice (PI F. Rohr) has the purpose to make the history of Roman women known, as it makes us understand some aspects of our times: the links that exist between patriarchal society and violence against women; the role of the education in women’s emancipation; the origin of some discriminations that in many countries marginalise women in many fields (professional achievement, remuneration, political representativeness).
2) Political Communication from the Murder of Caesar and Augustan Age
The project intends to investigate how the usual spaces for political debate were often replaced by new ways of communication per scripta, per imagines and per verba; the focus will be on the communication through political speeches given to the milites. F. Rohr has co-organised several national and international conferences.
