Curriculum vitae
LORENZO CALVELLI is an Associate Professor in Ancient History at the Ca' Foscari University of Venice, where he has been working continuously since 2005. He held research fellowships at the American Academy in Rome, the Warburg Institute in London and the Harvard Centre for Italian Renaissance Studies in Florence (Villa I Tatti). He was a Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Princeton, Sydney, Oxford and Warwick, as well as at the École française d’Athènes and the British School at Athens. He has been invited to speak at numerous academic institutions and international conferences worldwide.
He has published two research monographs devoted to Cyprus in Roman and post-classical times. He is the author of more than 100 scholarly articles and book chapters. His main research interests focus on ancient history and classical epigraphy, and he is particularly attentive to the relationship of the Adriatic region and the Eastern Mediterranean with Rome from the late republican to the late antique periods. He also works on the uses of the past and the history of classical scholarship, with particular reference to Cyriac of Ancona and the manuscript tradition of ancient inscriptions, as well as on epigraphic forgeries and the application of digital technologies to epigraphy.
He is the founder and co-editor of the Scopus-indexed Diamond Open Access journal «History of Classical Scholarship» as well as of the Open Access scientific book series «Studi ciprioti», devoted to interdisciplinary monographs on Cyprus.
He was Principal Investigator of a PRIN project on epigraphic forgeries (2017–2022), an interdisciplinary research project on sacred inscriptions and religious practices in north-eastern Italy during the transition from the pre-Roman to the Roman period (2021–2024) and a project on public epigraphy and Venetian rule in Cyprus (2022–2024), funded by the Veneto Region. He is currently the scientific coordinator of the Ca’ Foscari unit of the Erasmus+ project «DIGITALIA. Digital Solutions for Sustainable and Disaster Resilient Heritage Management» (2024–2026).
At Ca’ Foscari, he has coordinated the Research Institute on Digital Cultural Heritage since 2016 and is a member of the Executive Board of the Center for Cultural Heritage Technology.
He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, a corresponding member of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, a full member of the Deputazione di storia patria per le Venezie and of the Società dalmata di storia patria, as well as a resident member of the Ateneo Veneto.
