PhD in Modern Languages, Cultures and Societies and Linguistics

Programme

The Doctoral Program lasts for three years.

The breakdown of educational activities in the three years is as follows:

  • Year 1: 60 hours of educational activities divided as follows:
    • 30 hours of advanced methodology courses in the 1st semester
    • 30 hours of highly specialized in-depth seminars in the relevant fields in Semester II
  • Year 2: 60 hours of educational activities as follows:
    • 30 hours of advanced methodology courses in Semester I
    • 30 hours of highly specialized in-depth seminars in the areas of afferent in Semester II

At least 3 among the educational activities offered by the University Doctoral Office [ITA] should be added to the seminars in the first two years. The Athenaeum Security course is compulsory, but is not included in the above 3 activities.

  • Year 3: course attendance is not expected, in order to allow doctoral students to devote themselves entirely to the conclusion of the research project, the writing of the thesis, and the presentation of the results obtained in prestigious venues where to get feedback from the scientific community

Choice of seminars and other training activities

The choice of seminars and activities should be agreed with the mentor(s) and approved by the faculty. Each Ph.D. and Ph.D. student may also carry out "Other Training Activities" (e.g. lectures, classes, university courses, see below) which, given the positive opinion of the mentor(s) and the approval of the College of Teachers, may partially replace or supplement the hours of seminars and activities.

Meeting moments

For each year, the College sets meeting moments where doctoral and postdoctoral students are invited to present their research projects.
For the curriculum in Modern Languages, Cultures and Societies, the joint colloquium with Sorbonne Université is attended by both the professors and the students who benefit from the agreement. The seminar is organized in alternate years at the two locations.
Similarly, a series of seminars is organized for the Linguistics curriculum, in which each doctoral student presents the status of his or her research.

Modalities of verification

The activities of Ph.D. and Ph.D. students, constantly monitored by supervisors, will be supervised by the College, by an oral or written test, at the end of each semester of the course.
