Abstract

This seminar aims to get a hands-on overview of systems thinking and to practice systems mapping competencies which help to effectively change organizations together with the broader social, ecological, economic and technological systems where they are embedded. During the seminar, after a brief introduction, participants will work individually or in small groups – as they prefer – to make sense and to address any managerial, organizational or societal problem that relates to their own topic of study. In particular, participants will experiment the iterative development of two systems maps: causal loop diagrams and value network maps. Sketching these maps – even under a tight time constraint – helps participants reflect on how complex problems and systems of actors fundamentally represent two sides of the same coin; and, therefore, on how our own actions (as actors embedded in a system) do make a difference in addressing any problem – no matter how complex it might be.
