The course is part of the linguistic-philological-glottodidactic course of Language, Civilization and Language Sciences course and it is aimed at students who have Portuguese and Brazilian language in their study plan.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
Knowing the linguistic terminology and the specialized lexicon of the discipline.
Knowing and understanding the recent acquisitions of linguistic theories regarding the Portuguese language.
Knowing and understanding the significant interlinguistic variations between the Portuguese and the Italian grammatical system.

2. Applying knowledge and understanding:
Being able to use the analysis tools of formal linguistics to describe and understand aspects of Portuguese syntax.
Knowing how to identify and reflect on the interlinguistic variations between the syntax of Portuguese and the syntax of Italian.
Knowing how to properly use linguistic terminology in the application of acquired knowledge, for example in the analysis of new data or in the teaching of Portuguese.
Knowing how to apply the acquired knowledge to obtain new linguistic data.
Being able to solve problems of linguistic analysis of some complexity.

3. Making judgments:
Being able to present a hypothesis on data from the Portuguese.
Being able to produce examples of Portuguese to support or refute a syntactic hypothesis.

4. Communication skills:
Expressing in writing the hypotheses and linguistic aspects covered during the course using the specific Portuguese terminology of linguistic studies.
Being able to expose the topics covered during the course with terminological properties.
Being able, during the lessons, to interact with peers and with the teacher in a critical and proper way.

5. Learning skills:
Being able to develop critical reasoning in linguistics.
Being able to transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to a more or less expert audience in Portuguese.
Being able to research and select adequate bibliographic sources to study the linguistic phenomena of Portuguese.
Being able to develop the skills acquired to undertake higher studies.
Basic knowledge of linguistics theories and syntax; Portuguese level at least B1+/B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages.
Some elements of historical linguistics and formal linguistics of Portuguese will be addressed (with attention to the differences between PE and PB), in order to characterize this language in a comparative key. In particular, we will focus on:
1. Terminology of Portuguese linguistics.
2. Phenomena of grammatical change in the history of Portuguese.
3. Types of sentence.
4. Order of the constituents of the sentence.
5. System of personal pronouns: properties of strong, weak and clitical pronouns.
6. "Empty" grammatical categories.

Additional bibliographic material may be indicated or distributed by the teacher during the course and will be made available online.
The verification of learning takes place through a written test lasting 2 hours, which consists of 3 open-ended questions.
To pass the exam, a short written paper (5-10 pp.) on a topic discussed in the course is also required.
