The course aims at introducing the students to the linguistic and sociolinguistic situation of Arabic-speaking world, with particular reference to variation. The context -both diachronic and synchronic- (diglossia; diatopic and diastratic variations ) will also be described
The course aims to provide students with knowledge and methodological tools in the field of Arab sociolinguistics.
Objectives are to inform about variation of the Arabic language, both diachronically and synchronically, to stimulate the capacity for reflection and supply students with the basic methodological tools for the sociolinguistic analysis and for the interlinguistic comparison in the arabophone world.
Knowledge of Standard Arabic (phonetics, morphology, syntax); basic knowledge of a colloquial variety.
-Short profile of the history of the Arabic language: theories and problems; the varieties of the Arabian peninsula; neo-Arabic; middle Arabic.
-The sociolinguistics situation of contemporary Arabic-speaking world: diglossia and alternative theories; colloquial varieties; prestige varieties and identity; language policies in the post-colonial era.
