The course consists of a module held in the second semester and a year-round language practice course (“esercitazioni”) closely integrated with the module and co-ordinated by the Instructor and is intended to provide students with the metalinguistic knowledge and linguistic skills needed to understand and use the language in everyday, academic and specialist contexts. There will be a special focus on understanding complex literary texts, such as poems.

Knowledge and comprehension:
Both theoretical and applied knowledge and understanding of the language produced and used in Anglophone countries, in all kinds of contexts, with particular attention to morphology, syntax and the organizational structure of discourse.
Ability to apply knowledge and comprehension:
Ability to understand, analyse and autonomously produce multimodal texts in English appropriate to different contexts, recognizing linguistic registers and situations.
Autonomy in judgement:
To be able to interpret and analyse complex texts, including poetry.
Communicative skills:
Ability to interact appropriately in English, in different situations.
B2+ level of the CEFR, acquired by passing Anglo-American Language 1.
The teaching of Anglo-American Language 2 is divided into two parts:
1. Theoretical Module (Prof. Gregory Dowling)
2. Course of language exercises with the CEL to develop C1 skills in oral and written production and comprehension.

Titolo del modulo: An Introduction to English Composition:
The module proposes to teach, at an intermediate level, the techniques of literary composition, through the reading, analysis and comment of poems by North-American writers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The students will learn to construct short, well-focused essays, using appropriate language and expressing well-pondered judgements in correct English. They must also show they possess ability to recognize and appreciate the different registers of the written language and can grasp the subtleties of literary language.

Esercitazioni:
Further development of comprehension skills for oral and written texts
Development of speaking skills
- exercises leading towards C1 level on CEFR
Module (for all students, whether attending lessons or not):

The final exam of Anglo-American Language 2 consists of two parts: the module and the language exercises.
The written exam for the module consists of a short composition, in which the student must prove that he/she has acquired the skills taught during the module by analyzing a short poem (not seen before).
The language part will assess whether the student can apply the theoretical notions provided by the module and practised in the language exercises with the CEL by means of the translation of short texts (from Italian into English), lexical and grammatical exercises ("word formation", "phrasal verbs", ecc.), "reading comprehension", "listening comprehension" (listening to a dialogue or interview, taking notes, answering short questions and making a summary of the contents).
Frontal lessons, both traditional and with the help of multimedia supports (Moodle platform), and integrated by the active participation of the students in recognising and discussing the lexico-grammatical and organisational characteristics of the texts being discussed. The students will be invited to write compositions on the poems discussed in class, which will be corrected by the Instructor. Marks or assessments awarded for these compositions will not go towards the mark for the final exam.
