Title: The Rhetoric of Love in the Victorian Age

The module’s aim is to provide an overview of the evolution of the novel during the Victorian age, in particular the transition in literary history from the so-called High Victorianism to Modernism by analysing four novels in which love and passion play a key role. Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, Cousin Phillis and especially Tess, while highlighting the era’s most relevant phenomena – poverty and injustice, the industrial revolution and the scientific discoveries, the emancipation of women and insanity, social and sexual restraint – depart from conventional Victorian fiction in their open treatment of moral hypocrisy and subversion of the Romantic notion of love and desire.
Students will be assessed by a final written exam consisting of 2 open questions, 3 critical analysis of a given passage, and finally of a short translation from English into Italian. Non-native English speakers are requested to write a critical analysis of the given passage.
