The course aims at providing knowledge and interpretative tools useful to comprehend tourism as a geographical phenomenon. Besides, it aims at analyzing the behavior of the actors in tourism from the point of view of space and territory.
1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1 Use of the geographical terminology related to tourism
1.2 Knowledge of the classical models in tourism geography

2. Applying knowledge and analyzing:
2.1 Being able to use the above mentioned concepts and models to interpret the economic and socio-spatial dynamics of tourism development at different geographical scales
2.2 Recognizing the tourist development dynamics (past or present) and the related social and environmental problems

3. Ability to judge:
3.1 Evaluating, case by case, the economic, environmental and socio-cultural factors that concur to tourist sustainability (or unsustainability)

4. Communication skills:
4.1 Writing in a logic, coherent and synthetic style, in order to expose the knowledge gained
4.2 Use of an appropiate semantic and linguistic register

During the course some key concepts will be approached, such as definitions of tourism, some elements of tourism history, the main models in tourism, the impacts of tourism, the sustainability of tourism, the relationship between tourism and consumers practices. Moreover the theme of wetland tourism will be discussed, including the Venetian Lagoon.
Please note that the course includes a difference between students attending or not attending the lessons.

Written exam with open questions targeted at the measurement of the ability to apply knowledge and understanding and the ability to judge. For students attending classes exam questions will be on lesson’s notes and on the 2 specified textbooks; for not attending students questions will be on the 3 specified textbooks. The exams lasts 90 minutes (2 academic hours).
