The lessons are planned for the students enrolled at the Master's Degree Program [CM7] with the aim of instilling recent discoveries in the field of organic asymmetric synthesis useful to characterize the educational activities of the master degree course. Will be critically presented modern methodologies usefull for the stereocontrolled synthesis of chiral molecules through reactive processes which are, as matter of fact, breaking chemical operation of molecular symmetry.
It is expected that the contestants could reach a level of ability making their able to be endowed with:
- deep knowledge of organic chemistry;
- autonomy;
- comprehension (with self- confidence) of complex information;
- implementation without errors in new contexts, carrying out analysis and synthesis;
- acquisition of the ability to express by a reach lexicon;
- improvement of the abstraction capability.

The final evaluation will be based on the parameters as follows:
- Knowledge: capability to recall information, specific and general concepts, methods and processes, models, structures, classifications.
- Comprehension: capability to accept ideas, concepts and logic reasoning.
- Commitment: capability to use specific concepts and capability to use it in new situations.
- Capability: ability to analyze, to think critically, to synthesize information.
- Communication skill.
It is strongly suggested the deep knowledge of the topics of the preceding courses of Organic Chemistry 1 and Organic Chemistry 2 and, possibly, of Organic Chemistry 3 and laboratory, concerning in particular: acid-base theory, chemical equilibrium, conformational analysis, basic concept of stereochemistry, aromaticity, nomenclature of chemical compounds. Synthesis, reactivity, structure, retro-synthesis of traditional class of compounds: alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, halo-alkanes, ethers, alcohols, thiols, amines, carbonyl compounds (aldheydes and ketones) and their derivatives with alcohols and amines, carboxylic acid and derivatives, Structure, property and reactivity of carbocyclic aromatic systems.
- Concepts of asymmetric synthesis: stereogenic elements, chirotopic points, stereotopic groups and faces, symmetry, asymmetry and dissymmetry.
- Philosophy of symmetry breaking synthetic operations starting from molecular and synthetic symmetry as well as functional proximity concepts.
- Kinetic resolution (of racemates)-desymmetrizations (of symmetric compounds) relationships.
- Desymmetrization processes in action: synthesis of stereopure compounds.
- Stereotopic and stereofacial discriminations.
- Kinetic and/or thermodynamic control of asymmetric processes. Steric and electronic effects.
- Assembly carbon skeletons.
- Metathesis reactions.
- Synthesis of stereoids.
- Synthesis of prostaglandins.
- Short accounts of biomimetic synthesis.
- Functional groups introduction, transformation and removal.
- Basic concepts of nanochemistry.
- Versatile functional groups in organic transformations.
- Unexpected reactivities.
- Highlights on Nobel prize's recently awarded lectures.

Contestants have to deeply debate, in about 45 minutes, the topic introduced through the course by means of a oral presentation (like to a conference supported by slides) concerning a topic previously arranged. In special case of a different need, an “ad personam” final exam can be agreed upon alternative way. Contestants have the possibility to undergo their final exam in English or French language alternatively to the Italian one. In any case the contestants will demonstrate, in the final exam, their knowledge on the topic presented.

The final evaluation will be based on :

- Comprehension: capability to accept ideas, concepts and logic reasoning.
- Commitment: capability to use specific concepts and capability to use it in new situations.

The course considers detailed lessons on the themes previously presented in which will be:
- proposed and deeply discussed a number of not common exercises;
- provided additional, detailed, specific information concerning stereoselective processes;
- introduced methodologies useful for the assignement of absolute stereochemistry and absolute configuration of chiral molecules through the interpretation of mono and bidimensional (homo as well as hetero correlated) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra.
