The aim of the course is to investigate the relation between siyasa and sharia in contemporary Islamic countries through the lens of the comparative approach. The capacity of islamic legal tradition to resist to (or to adapt to) the modernization is verified through an analysis of the solutions adopted by different Islamic countries.
Knowledge of the islamic legal terminology used in the legal systems of Islamic countries and comprehension of the texts that use this kind of terminology.
Ability to correctly use legal terminology when requested to communicate the acquired knowledge.
Capacity to formulate opinions and judgments on the studied topics using the conceptual categories in an appropriate manner.
Knowldge of islamic classical law (sharia and fiqh), islamic philosophy, history of islamic countries

Relation between sharia and qanun
Colonialism and law
The process of codification of law
Sharia in contemporary Islamic countries
Legal reforms in Islamic countries

Knowing the law through the lens of literature and movies.
Knowing the law of a country is one of the possibile way to know at least some elements of the culture and society that are expression of that specific Country.
Literature and movies as well are instruments of knowledge; when they meet the law, it is possible to see how the law is perceived, understood and interpreted by the author (writer or director) as a mean to describe or explain the social dynamics object of the narrated story.
