Time and action in medieval fiction: from the French prose romance to the "Orlando Furioso"
The course wants to investigate a theme concerning narrative morphosyntax: the analysis of the discursive modalities developed by the French and Italian authors in the vernacular Middle Ages in order to represent temporality in complex narrative structures (the prose romance, the chivalric poem). The goal is to describe the constants that are active in the definition of the medieval vernacular style.
Knowledge.
- In-depth and advanced methodological knowledge in the field of medieval comparative literature;
- in-depth knowledge of the rhetorical-stylistic processes;
- in-depth digital knowledge, as regards the tools provided by the Web for philological research.
Skills.
- Ability to critically elaborate the bibliography on specific topics;
- ability to work on case studies through the application of specific methods.
It is essential to be able to read Old French texts directly.
The "entrelacement" in the French prose novel; the narrative machine in the Italian chivalric poem.

The course includes 30 hours of frontal lessons.
Italian
Throughout the academic year, two seminars will be organized (at least 10 meetings of 2 hours each), opened to students of the Bachelor's and Master's degree who want to graduate in Romance Philology and anyone interested (and willing translate Old French texts by himself), dedicated to: 1. "Chanson de Roland" as a philological problem: exercises on the Segre 1970 edition (first semester); 2. The "machine of the Furioso". Ariosto and the legacy of French feudal fiction (second semester). Attendance at each of the two seminars will guarantee the payment of 3 CFU.
