ITALIAN SCULPTURE OF THE '900 THROUGH 10 EXHIBITIONS: FROM MEDARDO ROSSO TO LEONCILLO
The course includes the study of the main solutions and sculptural inventions developed during the twentieth century in Italy (from about 1900 until the early 70s) by the greatest sculptors of the time, taking into account a dozen exhibitions (and catalogs) in which those proposals were made known and disseminated. Therefore, starting from: First Exhibition of Impressionism in Italy (Florence 1910, where Medardo Rosso had the opportunity to present himself with a personal anthology for the first time in Italy) until the 1968 Venice Biennale (where Leoncillo and Pascali's works appear for the last time) and until Volterra '73 (where the complex vigor of Mino Trafeli fully manifested itself), through other historical events such as the Quadriennale d'Arte Nazionale in Rome in 1931 and 1935 and personal exhibitions such as that of Boccioni in Paris in 1913 and Lucio Fontana in Milan (Galleria del Naviglio) in 1949, the investigation will involve the most important Italian sculptors of the first five to six decades of the twentieth century.
The bibliography will be indicated during the first lesson, and then also reported in syllabus and ads, but those who want to start work on the theme indicated can meanwhile download the catalog of the First Exhibition of Impressionism of 1910 (https://dlc.mpdl.mpg.de/dlc/view/escidoc:66854:3/recto-verso ).
and consult the following catalogues in the library:
1 – Biennali di Venezia del 1948 e 1968 e Quadriennali di Roma del 1931 e 1935
2 – Catalogo della Mostra di Ca’ Pesaro del 1919
3 – Catalogo della Mostra del Novecento Italiano a Milano 1926
