FRENCH LANGUAGE

As a language course, the class contributes to reaching the objective of the knowledge and comprehension of the language of international relations at autonomy level (B2) in French. It also contributes to the acquisition of the capacity to develop original and methodologically sound discourses, both in oral and written form, on general and specific case studies in the field of international and intercultural relations, enabling the participation in scholarly debates on such topics.

1. Knowledge and understanding of written and oral documents relevant to the field of international relations (history texts, newspaper articles on foreign policy issues, political discourse, international agreements, etc. with good knowledge of French and Francophone civilization and of the sectoral language.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding in written productions (official letter, newspaper article, report, etc.) and oral productions in interaction or in continuous production (as simulations of professional activities)
3. Autonomy of judgment. Development of argumentative capacity in French
4. Communication skills developed for a B2 level of the Common European Framework for Languages.
5. Learning skills: learn to draw up bibliographies of French texts and reports.

A B1+ level is needed in order to attend this course and the practice classes during the second semester.

Students who are complete beginners are invited to attend an initial linguistic training in the first year following courses offered at the University.
- courses at the University Language Center (CLA)
- from September to the end of October, special course for beginners for LCSL students (Dott.ssa Durello)
- all year round, French language course offered for Oriental languages ​​(Dott.ssa Durello)

In the first semester of the second year, these students will attend the B1+ level preparatory practice courses of French language, and in the second semester they will attend the module and the B2 level practice course.

Module for the second semester (Prof. Marie-Christine Jamet).
We will examine cultural topics related to the RIC pathways (major historical events related to the French and Francophone world, geographical outlines, political and administrative organization of France, position of France in Europe, immigration to France, etc.). They will be addressed through texts in French language, taken from magazines, newspapers, essays, etc. They will be the object of understanding, analysis, translation, discussion during the lessons. The linguistic reflection will be focused on the vocabulary also specialized in the fields of study, on the structures inherent to the different registers, and on aspects of contrasting grammar between Italian and French.

B1 Level exercises in the first semester (Dott.ssa Véronique Mounition) split in two groups, preparatory to B2 Level practice course at the second semestre.
B2 Level exercises in the second semester (Dott.ssa Lydia Sattler) starting from general issues such as sustainable development, globalization, economic growth, education, and other current issues, the exercises will cover
- written comprehension / production with grammatical review,
- comprehension / oral production with grammatical review.

- a written test, lasting 3 hours, which will consist of a text comprehension questionnaire, civilization questions and a short written production (30 points); Use of the French monolingual dictionary and foreign / Italian language for foreign students
- an oral assessment in French which will focus on the content of the form for 27 points. The remaining 3 points, optional, will be given to the student who shows a research on one of the suggested topics on the course platform (CMM)

Non-attending students will have to read two of the books proposed with the respective reading report to have a total number of hours of work equivalent to 6 credits = 150 hours) and can do a search for the 3 additional points.
