This course presents a thorough and systematic introduction to contemporary principles and practices of managing. It focuses on the basic roles, skills and functions of management, with special attention to managerial responsibility for effective and efficient achievement of goals. Special attention is given to organisation culture, planning and decision-making, and controlling. Students will learn that the study of management is not a precise science and as such it continues to evolve. As students progress through this course the learning objectives for each chapter of the textbook will indicate the route we will take as we cover the material. Each week we’ll focus on different aspects of the managerial process, its inherent issues, problems, and solutions. The textbook chosen for this course offers an excellent assembly of text, real life illustrations, personal surveys, and case studies.
This course is designed to develop student awareness of organisations and the variety of skills useful in managerial roles, foster a spirit of critical inquiry and stimulate student consciousness of research as a source of contested and uncertain knowledge. Having successfully completed this module, students will be able to reflect on management theory and practice through examining the nature of management and human activity and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:
Historical developments within the management discipline and diversity of management thinking;
Tools and techniques used within General Management;
Prominent theories within the discipline of Management;
How the role of management can affect the performance of an organisation;
Discuss and communicate the management evolution and how it will affect future managers;
Identify and evaluate social responsibility and ethical issues involved in business situations;
Explain how organizations adapt to an uncertain environment and identify techniques managers use to influence and control the internal environment;
Identify and properly use vocabularies within the field of management to articulate one's own position on a specific management issue and communicate effectively with varied audiences
There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, curiosity for and some prior knowledge of the business environment as it is represented in the mainstream and social media would facilitate the understanding of the topics discussed in class.
