Seaports are key facilitators of international trade and their efficiency, competitiveness and safety are essential ingredients of the wealth of commercial actors worldwide. This unique course which is running for the first time this year is looking at the commercial significance of ports and their legal infrastructure through a comparative lens. We will be looking at the essential features of CIF and FOB contracts and chartering to understand why port administration and its efficiency are crucial to trade. We will then discuss the main administrative options for port infrastructures and work through the main legal instruments regulating ports worldwide.

The course will be delivered through interactive seminars and will cover the following:

1. The international sale of goods on shipment terms: essential components;
2. Charterparties, bills of lading and the role of ports;
3. The legal infrastructure of ports: the UK model;
4. The Far East: the Singapore and Hong Kong models;
5. The Indian model;
6. The West: US, Canada and some South American examples;
7. The Italian model.
The subject is so original and unique that there is no textbook currently available to cover what we do. You will be given electronic copies of statutes, bylaws and regulations as well as a number of synopses to guide you through the contents of the course.
The exam will consist of a 2500 words original essay (including footnote). More details to follow.
