The course aims to provide the knowledge of colored organic substances used as dyes and pigments and gives the knowledge necessary to their synthesis and application. Some examples of synthesis of pigments and dyes will be carried out in laboratory. Basic elements of polymer science and practical information on paint, varnish and adhesives composition and their application will be also given. These knowledge are necessary to form a specialized scientist of the conservation, being in agreement with the objectives of the curriculum of study in conservation.
1) Knowledges:
a) dyes and pigments.
b) Organic chemistry for the synthesis of pigments and dyes.
c) Toxicity.
d) Classification of colors: Color Index names and numbers, Pantone and RAL.
e) Types of restoration material and their analysis.
f) Basic of polymer science and polymerization, film formation and adhesion, fibers, plastics. Coatings, varnish, paint, adhesives, thinner and solvent.
g) Material degradation: oxygen, light, and weathering.

2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
a) Methods of application of pigments.
b) Methods of application of dyes.

3) Judgment skills:
a) Choice of a solvent for application in forming a film and for its removal.
b) Choice of a fiber or plastic materials in protections of the cultural heritages.
c) Choice of a compatible coloring matter in the restoration.
d) Choice of a compatible healing material.

4) Communication skills:
a) Team working.
b) Dissemination capacity.
c) Public relations.

5) Learning skills:
a) Capacity of find information on unknown materials.
b) Internet searches
The attendance of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry is necessary to reach the basic level for a comprehension of the course
Historical remarks on colored matter application. Remarks on stimulus, vision, color vision, light and colorimetry. Organic chemistry for the synthesis of pigments and dyes. Fundamental on dyes and pigments. Toxicity of dyes and pigment. Classification of colors: Color Index (CI) names and numbers, Pantone and RAL Systematic synthesis of the coloring matters by following the CI number. Types of restoration material and analysis of their components. Remarks of polymer science and polymerization. Film formation and adhesion. Fibers, plastics, films. Coatings, varnish, paint, adhesives, diluent and solvent. Material degradation: oxidation, light, and weather fastness.
Notes from the lessons and materials furnished by the teacher
Evaluation of the comprehension during the course by discussions on the contents presented.
The exam is composed of a written part, where the student responds at three open questions and the overall values of the written part is 28/30. The time necessary for the written is 45-60 minutes depending on the length and difficulties of the questions. The oral is an integration of the written part that allows to increase the final vote of the exam; the student may decide to avoid to carry out the oral, but in this way, he can reach an evaluation of 27/30 at most.
Frontal lessons plus laboratory. Particular care in the laboratory is evaluated the ability of group working to reach the goal of a synthesis. The comparison of the results (mainly visual) of the various group are useful to evaluate the importance of preparation variables on the final color, the final discussion and analysis of the results is a useful tool to evaluate the team work ability.
