The course will introduce students to the instruments necessary to historical and social research, concentrating on qualitative methods. The teaching will include an introduction to the aims and scope of qualitative research, the formulation of a research question, research design, how to conduct a bibliographical research, how to distinguish between primary and secondary sources, how to conduct an interview, ethnography, the ethics of research, including the role of the researcher in the production and analysis of data and how to develop a self-reflexive research. .
By the end of the course participants will:
- have an understanding of different methodological approaches to qualitative research
- be able to conduct a bibliographic research and identify primary and secondary sources and relevant documents
- have developed skills to write an interview schedule
- be able to prepare and conducting interviews and ethnographic observation
- be able to discuss some of the ethical issues associated with conducting qualitative research
- be able to appraise the quality of qualitative research.
Criteria for admission are the same as for the study programme MIM. Other curricula will be evaluated on a case by case basis. A good knowledge of English is essential.
The course will include sessions on:

3. how to structure a research project
4. planning a research
5. how to conduct a bibliographical research
6. primary and secondary sources
7. oral sources
8. how to conduct an interview
9. ethnographic approaches
10. ethics of research
11.the role of the researcher in the production and analysis of data; self-reflexive research and the involvement of the researcher
The course will include both oral and written examinations.
The teaching method will include lectures and tutor presentations, small group work, student led presentations, and individual research projects.
Through the practical sessions included in the course, students will have the opportunity to present a research proposal, practise interviewing and observation skills.
