This is one of the core courses of the curricula China, Korea and Japan of the Corso di Laurea "Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa".
Its formative objectives are within the area of language, cultural and humanistic skills learning.
The course aims to offer an introductory survey of the history and culture of Vietnam from its origins the contemporary period. In so doing, the course furnishes students with the requisite historical background to the study of the language, which will commence in the second semester (Vietnamese Language 1 mod 2).
Knowledge and understanding:
- to know and understand the main phases and phenomena of the political, social and cultural history of Vietnam from the beginnings to the contemporary period
- to acquire knowledge of historical research methodology
- to acquire the tools needed to subsequently deepen the knowledge and understanding of historical contexts in other teachings, from different points of view (e.g. linguistic.)

Applying knowledge and understanding:
- to cope with the historiographical themes in an autonomous way, using arguments that are critically and historically sound
- to critically apply historical research methodology to the historical period studied in the course

It is warmly recommended that students take also the course on Vietnamese Language and Culture. Both courses work together to provide students with a strong foundation in culture and history prior and as integration to formal language study.
