Academic training, especially in Italy, focuses on learning resolution techniques, typically on the basis of exercices. Such a training can be valid as far as it relates to acquiring technical capabilities, but may be insufficient considering the real challenges that students will have to face in a professional situations. Often the type of problems faced require to put together, with imagination and rigor, many transversal competencies, rather than applying, sometimes mechanically, resolution techniques.

In this context, the laboratory provides students with the opportunity to increase their potential in terms of problem solving and their ability to achieve rigorous and convincing analysis and to comunicate them efficiently.

The laboratory will cover many topics useful to this end, starting from most common reasoning errors, present, for instance in newspapers and everyday's talks, it will consider improper use of economic reasoning or of statistic tools. Guidelines for effective writing skills will be presented that will for instance help students in making their master thesis.

IN this class, students will produce a set of writings on topics of interest chosen together with the instructor. The purpose is to produce a document fitting with professional quality standard. Such a document can also constitute a chapter of the master thesis.

The pace of the lecture, proposed on two periods, allows to increase interaction with other lectures and to correctly elaborate the contents of the teaching.
We will develop analytical and criical sense of students as well as autonomy.
Increased communication skills.
Increased awareness and knowledge of economic issues.
No particolar requisite is necessary appart from intellectual rigor and curiosity. Common use economic and statistic concepts will be used. Those should normally be familiar to students.

For efficient writing we recommand : "expectations: teaching writing in the reader's Perspective" by George Gophen. Extract are available on the net.
Reference to other guidelines will also be provided during the laboratory.
