The course aims to provide the students with an overview of the possibilities offered by informatic applications to archaeology and analytical tools for understanding them. Specifically, the discussion will concentrate on technologies for archaeological data acquisition and management (both from excavation and field survey); a comprehensive overview on the application and potential of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for management and promotion of cultural heritage will also be provided.

A broad outline of the manifold computing applications to archaeology will be presented during the lectures, including case studies of current projects; the outline will be complemented by 'handson' training pertaining the implementation of an archaeological GIS.
Specifically, the following topics will be covered:
• introduction to GIS: general definition and introduction to basics;
• operative steps in the implementation of an historicalarchaeological GIS: from project design to production of digital and printable maps.
Definitive programme.
